After installing XP media center on my inspiron 1520 i am unable to get it to recognize usb devices. I looked in the device manger at the drivers and it is missing some for the usb. I am not sure which one to download. I tried installing some and they did not work. I went to dell's site and did not find anything. I was wondering if any one else has had this problem and if so how did they fix it?
    Thanks

You can try automatically update drivers option from device manager, select unknown device- right click select update drivers- select this time only option- tick first option- from there it will search for drivers and install it.

Try downloading the Intel chipset drivers from Dell's website. I don't recall having that problem with my 1520 when I went to XP.

USB ports should work out of the box (so something else might be wrong), but here are some issues you might want to check...

    1. Did you install Windows XP vanilla (no Service Packs and then upgrade to Service Packs later)? If so, you might need to tell device manager to update the drivers for the USB ports so it can recognize the new drivers installed with SP1 or later.

    2. Did you install the Intel INF utility? I don't have time to find it on Intel's website, but install the one for 9 series chipsets.

    3. Have you tried alternative devices in alternative ports? Just to be sure it isn't a port issue. If you put in a USB flash driver and boot up pressing F12 at the Dell logo does it give you an option to boot from the USB drive? If so, that means the port itself is working but the problem lies in Windows, otherwise the problem is the port itself.

You need to install the Dell Notebook System Software. You can find it on the driver's page. This is supposed to be installed before any other driver. After installing it and restarting, if the USB ports still aren't working, go to Device Manager and delete all the devices under Universal Serial Device controllers. To delete them, right click on each one and click delete. Restart, and they will be redetected. The Notebook System Software is under the System Utilities part of the driver page.

This will definitely work. I had the same problem with my Inspiron 1420.
