    USB powered external harddrive battery usage

    I've ordered the Vostro 1500 with a 6cell battery.
    I was wondering if anyone knows how much juice an external HDD (2.5") that is USB powered would take.
    I'll probably be getting this ext h HDD

    I have a WD passport (2.5", 160Gb), and it needs more than 500mA = the maximum USB current per the standard (it needs something like 800mA). At 5V, that is about 4W, which is about as much as the display IIRC.

    In other words, not a disaster, but it'll shave a little bit from your battery life
