    Hi,

I've recently bought a Dell Inspiron 1525 and am having some problems with the USB ports. I have a USB pen with a lot of work and important documents on it which I need to transfer onto the computer, but every time I insert the USB pen it seems to all load up but then when I try to move any of the documents it comes up with 'not responding'. I've tried it in more than one USB port and 3 or 4 times it's done this, and I've had to restart. I've also left it for about 5 minutes to let the green bar at the top load, but again it got to the point where it was nearly full but not progressing, so I tried again and had the same problem.

Any ideas what could be the problem? Is this a common problem with Dells/Laptops?

    Thanks

Does the drive work on other computers? I haven't seen any common problems with the USB on the 1525.

Yes the Drive works on other computers. I've used it on 2 other PCs. I can see the documents when I plug it in, but some of them appear blurry.

you ought to try the pen in all of the different USB ports to see if that helps.

Is there a 'usb' driver at the manufacturer's website? It's a long shot, but the computer may not be 'seeing' the pen correctly.

When I plug in my MP3 player for example, Vista keeps asking me if I want to give my XBox 360 access to all my media files. Uh, yeah, its an MP3 player Vista, I don't have an XBox.

Okay, do the USB ports work correctly with other devices? Have you tried the usual uninstall reinstall drivers? Check the Manufacturer for updated drivers? Check if there is a BIOS update for your motherboard?

All the other ports work, I've since tried the USB pen on another computer which worked fine (so I've emailed myself the documents I need for now and I also know it definitely does still work), but that was windows XP, and I'm on Vista. I'd forgotten that this pen hadn't worked on a friends computer before, which was Vista as well, so I'm thinking maybe for some reason this pen just doesn't like Vista, or vice/versa.

    Cheers for the advice guys!

Vista does respond differently to things that didn't use to be problems for me. I hope that something gets the thing to work. Otherwise, are the pens expensive? You may have to think about getting a new one.
