Pardon me - since i got my windows 7 disk, the next day i downloaded ubuntu 9.10 that was released .. and ya .. i am on that now .. so sad win 7 got wasted, for all the waiting i did for the past week .. :)
Ubuntu 9.10 is perfect and to be true it too just works out of the box , given the fact that it has to support infinite pc configurations it is great !!! Hail 9.10 .. and if you wont try you will surely miss something great. Where else do you have a resume and sleep time of 2-4 seconds. bootup time of less than 15 seconds .. It doesnt have a lot more to take to catch up .. i am certain that in a year or so you will see emergence of linux everywhere .. Just that volume is what promotes things, if a lot of people start using linux, a lot of hardware manufacturers will be forced to give better drivers and support.

So go ahead and experience linux, most likely you might return back to windows for some reason or other, but atleast the experience would be worth.

Are you running it on a notebook? If so, how is the battery life? I ran ubuntu on my dell i6000d for about 6 months, but the difference in battery life was unbearable. With my 9 cell battery, I was getting 4+ hours in Windows XP MCE, and less than 2 hours in ubuntu. Other than that, I was generally happy with everything else.

Heh, I've been running 9.10 for the past few weeks and it has been great :). The only disappointment I've had with Karmic was due to the default artwork after login (which I immediately changed anyways). I do like what they've done with the boot splash and login screen especially considerring it matches my theme (a modified version of Dust) rather well :D.

Battery life in Ubuntu is pretty much always worse than Windows but I'm surprised you get under 50% of the battery life compared to XP which has worse power management compared to Windows 7 (which IMO my Ubuntu battery life is roughly 60% of).

I downloaded the 64bit ISO, but couldn't get it to boot on my Studio 1555.

I installed it on my Vostro 1500 and had several issues with it whereas 9.04 ran great. I guess your mileage will vary. :(

Weird, my VAIO has always lasted more on Ubuntu than on Windows. Though I'm not that happy with latest release. I was expecting more optimization in general not faster boot times or fancy login screens.

The switch to ext4 greatly improved performance if you weren't using it on Jaunty Jackelope. The other primary optimization aside from boot time was Intel GPU performance.
