I have a new E1705 and don't want to pay for installed McAfee Security Center.

After reading numerous negative reviews about McAfee Security Center on Download.com, I'm not even sure I want McAfee to be my Antivurus, even though I have had it on my prior computer, included with my AOL dialup service which I am planning to continue for at least the next six months.

I saw positive remarks regarding AVG AntiVirus Free Edition and mention of Avast.

Any suggestions/feedback would be welcomed. This is my first post in my several months of reading this site. The level of knowledge demonstrated is way beyond my level. I thank all who contributed unknowingly to my E1705 configuration.

I greatly appreciate MarkMcK's March 2006 excellent "E1505 Clean-Up" post, as I know I wouldn't undertake any operation without some support. (26.McAfee Uninstaller was the first thiing I referred back to after getting started.) I also don't wish to pay Dell software service for somethig I might be able to do myself. Am working up to uninstalling McAfee Security Center. Of this, I am certain.

Thanks in advance to all who take the time to respond.

Yes, get rid of all paid antivirus software and go with AVG Free. Its the best antivirus out there, in my opinion, and its ironically FREE!

Heuristic analysis, daily updates, automatic updating, email scan..list goes on...

I don't know what Amit is talking about, but as you can see I am giving you the link to downloading Gristsoft's AVG Free.

There is a lot of bloatware on Dell notebooks - it's probably not stuff you'd ever want to use. Even if you uninstall it, junk will be left behind. Take a look at the format guide, that would probably help you more than anything - a fresh start:

As for antivirus - check our Software forum for numerous threads and posts on free antivirus software - AVG and avast! are very good.

Oh - and I would never install anything you get from AOL.

    A quick thank you.

I uninstalled McAfee Security Center and installed AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition thru Download.com.

Also, I will follow advice and use the AOL Security Center disks for coasters when they arrive.
