I just got my new Vostro 1500 which came with the Norton Anti-virus 30 day trial. I'm thinking about uninstalling it and downloading either Avast or AVG. Is it OK to go and download (but not install) Avast or AVG before I uninstall Norton? I'm afraid to uninstall Norton and then go out on the web without any anti-virus protection. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Yes, you can download anything, even other anti-virus software, before you uninstall Norton.

when uninstalling nortons make sure to use the nortons uninstall program they have. nortons leaves all kinds of stuff all over the place..also i would recc avira or nod32 imo over avg or avast

you know - i didnt even think of this when i ordered - i told them not to put ANY av software on the machine knowing that i would get my own "free" solution - now i realize, i probably wont want to step foot in the intertubes without some sort of protection

i know that i can just download the avast install file and transfer it over via a flash drive - but what about the registration steps you have to take before you can even get to the xp desktop? i received my computer yesterday but didnt even get the chance to open up the box - i plan on finally getting everything set up tonite when i get home from work - what do you all think?

i suppose it cant be THAT bad - if i get a virus from the 20 or so seconds im "unprotected" - avast can just wipe it out...right?

My HP was supposed to come without as well, but there it was. Links to various other software, including the Norton Removal Tool on my website.

I agree. Make sure to use the Norton Removal Tool. I found it off of Symantec's website. The DL is quick, 1mb.

I also would not hesitate to go online for a few minutes without virus protection. As long as you go to normal places and avoid pop-ups you'd be fine.

Man that is the truth.. I did not use the removal tool and lost my internet connection.. Ended up having to do a vista restore point back to factory default to put the norton back on.. then the removal tool cleaned it out once and for all. The removal tool will take ALL symantec products out. But thats a good thing.. Don't buy or install anything from symantec. All of their softwares are broken and bloated.
