I just finished doing a clean install of Vista SP1 on my new Studio 1537. Everything has gone well, however when I checked Device Manager I have one device with an exclamation mark next to it. When I clicked on the unknown device properties it tells me that it is "Intel(R) ICH9M LPC Interface Controller - 2919" I've looked all over Dell's Driver and Download site and I can't find the driver for this device nor do I know what category I should look under. When I contacted Dell's support they wanted me to unistall the device and overwrite my current BIOS version, A07, with an older version, A05. I decided that wasn't the best way so I thought I'd ask here hoping someone could help. After my install I loaded the drivers in the following order per Dell's directions: Notebook System Software, Chipset, Audio, Video, NIC Card, Dell Quickset, Wireless NIC, Touchpad. I didn't download and install the SATA drivers from Dell's website because my drive model isn't one of the ones listed for use with the driver. My drive is listed as a ST9320320AS. I'd appreciate any help someone can offer.
Thanks,
Bill : )

Confirm you have the latest IMSM driver installed... -
It appears to be the Intel Matrix Storage Manager
http://support.dell.com/support/dow...1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=41&fileid=246755
It's under the 1535 and I not sure why Dell didn't include it on the 1537 downloads. -
-
I mostly recommend the Dell drivers because I had seen the Intel version refuse to install on a few other notebooks.
-
somms & atbnet, thanks for your replies. I assumed that because I was installing from a Vista SP1 disc that I didn't need to worry about the Intel Matrix Storage Manager. I guess I was wrong huh? Thanks again for all your help.

OK I have one last question and then I'm off to bed. Should I redo my clean install of Vista since I didn't load this driver before loading the OS or can I install the driver now? Which way am I better off? BTW, Dell's on-line chat support was pretty useless. I would have thought that they would have this at the tip of their fingers.
Thanks Again!

This driver should be installed after you have installed the OS. As you can see your system works without out it just fine.
-
Thanks again atbnet. I'll have to do this tomorrow as it's getting late. One more thing...I was trying to connect to my WiFi and I have mine set to not broadcast the SSID, filter on MAC addresses and also I use a 128 bit WEP key. I could not connect to my WiFi until I set it to broadcast the SSID even though I obviously know the the name of my SSID. Until I set it to broadcast the name, I could not connect. Any thoughts?
Thanks again!

I have the exact same problem on my Studio 1537. In Device Manager there are two unknown devices one called "SM Bus Controller" and the other simply "Unknown Device".
I tried installing both of the Intel Matrix drivers but neither worked.
Any suggestions appreciated. -
Unknown Device is for Sound CARD IMO!
If you install Dell Sound/Audio Driver everything will be fine!
But I recommend you to stay with Default Vista Driver if you are Studio owner! -
I installed the sound drivers but the devices are still unknown. I think it might be the firewire but I can't find any drivers.

I have the same "Unknown Device"!
I had this issue fixed - after I installed all software/drivers from dell's web!
But now I cannot tell you "how is the one who will solve your problem"!
You can remove from the list:
Blue tooth, Wi-Fi, Touch Pad, Mouse, Video Card, Creative Web Cam
MmM try with SD drivers (SD Card drivers)
I have:
on Intel(R) ICH8M-E LPC Interface Controller - 2815
Looks like the same issue (my ICH is 8M, your 9M)
I'm 100% sure some driver/program from Dell's Web will fix your "unknown device" issue but I really don't remember "who was" -
atbnet, I haven't had a chance to resolve the unknown device issue yet since it was so late last night and now I'm at work. I noticed you linked me to the IMSM driver for the 1535. Do you think there will be any issues using a driver for a different model Studio 15? Since I haven't really done anything to my laptop yet except load the OS I'm trying to decide if I should start over and follow these instructions:
"When Vista is installing, it brings up a screen that asks which partition to ad Vista onto, when there look at the lower right side...and hit the load drivers selection. Before you hit search for the drivers, slip in the Drivers disk, allow Vista to find and install the AHCI drivers, when done with that...slip Vista disk back into the drive, select which partition to install it to, and hit install Vista."
The only thing I have to lose by doing it over is my time. I can't decide which way would be better. Also, couldn't I just slip in the Dell Driver CD and have Vista search for the AHCI driver instead of downloading the version for the 1525? After all it should be on the CD supplied by Dell shounld't it?
Thanks,
Bill ; ) -
I had no problem installing it after my OS had been installed. You could try to look for it, Dell should have included it but for some reason didn't. The Model difference shouldn't be a probably unless Dell has the file check which notebook it is being installed on. You could also use somms link to clear up any doubt.

i had this problem for a while when i first got my studio15 also. i believe it has to do with the order with which you install all the drivers and the notebook system software.. i reinstalled vista and drivers, had the problem and many other issues, reformatted, reinstalled, and paid close attention to the order i installed everything..
OS > Notebook System Software > Intel Matrix > Chipsets > etc...
after this, my device manager is clean and i havent had a crash in a while. wOrd! -
OS -> Chipset (including Intel maxtrix) -> Video, Wireless, Mouse,Cam...
Chipset drivers are like base for all other drivers..
But in Studio case some Default Vista Drivers are better... -
Thanks for your replies. I loaded the drivers in the following order per Dell's directions from a technical support document: Notebook System Software, Chipset, Audio, Video, NIC Card, Dell Quickset, Wireless NIC, Touchpad. The only device drivers I haven't loaded are for the fingerprint reader and the ITE CIR InfraRed receiver. I stopped when I found the "Intel(R) ICH9M LPC Interface Controller - 2919" unknown device in Device Manager. However in my quest for an answer I did find this tidbit from a blog about installing XP on a Studio 1535: "This 'unknown device' is a device on Intel(R) ICH8M LPC Interface Controller - 2815 has been fixed by downloading and installing the ITE CIR InfraRed receiver." So I think I might try doing the IR receiver install when I get home and see if that does the trick. I thoroughly read Les' thread about doing a clean install of Vista and I swear I read that the AHCI driver installation is taken care of when doing a fresh install from a Vista SP1 disc but that thread is so long my memory may have been blurred. I'll try the IR driver first and see if that fixes it.
Thanks,
Bill : )
EDIT: Problem Resolved!
OK I resolved the unknown device issue by installing the ITE CIR Infrared Device drivers. Now the only unknown device is the fingerprint reader for which I have yet to install the driver. Since I don't have a remote control with my 1537 I neglected to install the IR driver. It's always the simple things. I double checked my drive controlers and the AHCI drivers are installed as I originally thought. Now I can complete my clean install and update Vista. Thanks to everyone for their posts and help.

Installing the IR drivers got rid of my "Unknown Device" but "SM Bus Controller" is still there.
EDIT
Solved it. -
Hey T1ger5, can you tell me what you did to fix yours? I've still got the same problem after installing the Intel drivers. Did I do them in the wrong order??
-
I fixed the SM Bus controller by reinstalling everything in the right order. I am still left with the one "unknown device" using msinfo I got the ID of it, and I'm nearly positive that it's the IR receiver, which is weird because I can install that driver , supposedly successfully, but it never shows up in device manager.
Anyone else have trouble with the IR receiver or have any advice on it? Can I safely ignore since I don't use a remote? -
I had the same problem with the infrared in Windows 7 64-bit, though 32-bit Vista was OK. ... installing the official drivers didn't help, but I found if I updated the device manually by pointing to C:\dell\drivers\R196531\INFDrv\64OS it found the 64-drivers and worked (also a folder for 32-bit)

Thanks Jason, that worked perfectly for me.
