NOTICE: I have not tested what I am about to say, merely suggesting that someone on here with one of these configurations trys it to see if there is a noticable improvement as compared to stock drivers. As such, I am not responsible for any damage/errors this may cause to your laptop.
Hey guys, I've been doing a little lurking around the LaptopVideo2Go.com forums looking for driver updates and modded .inf files to work with the Quadro NVS 140M/135M found on the new Latitude D830's and D630's (if you configured it with such.) I've found that the 140M corresponds to [DEV_0429] in the .inf file, and the 135M corresponds to [DEV_042B].
As such, if you peruse the ForceWare Release 100 subforum HERE, you will find a list of the most up to date drivers released from NVIDIA, with modded .inf files attached to them. They are organized by driver version number (higher = newer) and second by operating system (XP 32/64bit and Vista 32/64bit). The most recent driver I've found for Vista 32bit without reported errors is this one here. This driver is ForceWare version 160.04 for Vista 32bit. The Quadro NVS 140m/135m are not listed as "Originally Supported" devices, however, upon inspection of the modded .inf file, both [DEV_0429] (140M) and [DEV_042B] (135M) are contained. Thus, this driver, along with the modded .inf file, should be compatible with the Quadro NVS 140M and/or the Quadro NVS 135M.
Now, I currently do not have my D830 with the 140M to test it on, as it arrives on Monday. (YAY!)
To all of you with the laptops already on hand who were struggling/complaining about the fudgy support for the Vista drivers, this could be the answer. You could try installing them, but read THIS FAQ first. Also read THIS Quickstart to Updating ForceWare thread. If someone can validate that this does/doesn't work, please let me know.
As stated in the disclaimer before, this may NOT work. I merely think it should. I'll probably try when I get my laptop, but just wanted to throw this out there. If anyone has any comments/questions/suggestions, please let me know.
Good luck if you try it!
-
Has anyone tried this yet?
-
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Will get on it later today. Will keep you updated.
-
I have mine waiting for me when I get off work as well
It arrived earlier today, so my trial and error period begins as well.
-
heh...i'm posting this from my new d830...i'm not gonna mess with the drivers quite yet...maybe a clean vista install first....
-
Are these drivers different than the ones released on 6/26 on the dell website? I have also heard that NVIDIA has new ones on their website...
-
Alright, I'm downloading it now. I gotta say tho, I've tried a couple of these before with miserable results.
I tried using ForceWare X 101.43 for Windows Vista 32bit with a D630. Followed whatever instructions they said, says "windows cannot find the file specified." The end. Won't even say what file.
Tried both the "have disk" and the setup program. Both failed with minimal information, like "setup has exited without updating your drivers" or "cannot find file." Gee, thanks
Anyone else try? -
any results from this yet?
-
Maybe I'm not making this clear. I tried ForceWare X 101.43 for Windows Vista 32bit and got an error. Wouldn't even install
-
Same here... cannot find the hardware necessary to install the driver
-
I posted this in a different forum, but this fits more with the topic so ill repost:
I received mine a week or so ago.
At first, i was kind of annoyed with the laggy vista aero, so i switched back to XP.
However, on sunday, i decided to do a dual boot and slowly get used to vista.
But WOW. This computer is AMAZING on vista now. Much faster than the first time that I installed vista (and i did a clean install then also). I didn't go back to XP yet, and am going to remove the XP partition soon, because i am enjoying vista so much more.
I think it is because of the updated drivers from laptopvideo2go. My base score is 3.7, which is better than then the one that I got with Dell's drivers.
I'm using these drivers:
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=13648
Just follow the directions given to update.
Also, the only drivers that i installed from Dell are the network ones - for both wired ethernet and the intel wireless.
More info:
Here are the exact directions i followed:

My laptop has been running great since. -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
What card did you have and which one of these options did you select?
UPDATE:
Prior to installing the Forceware driver, I ran a 3DMark05 test with all stock software. The score was 984.
Following the above post, I selected the option for 440 on 162.15.
When I rebooted my Windows Aero score remained the same, 3.2. However, I decided to run 3DMark05 again.
The resulting score? 3063!

EDIT2: The Aero score did not change because I did not update it. My new Aero score is 3.4. -
Great! I'm glad it works.
Hopefully the new drivers will continue to increase this cards performance. -
i'm confused now..... I thought you weren't able to get the driver installed?
-

EDIT: Having read numerous comments about the 140M supposed equivalence to the 8400GS, I ran one more test with the 8400GS option on 162.15. Aero score stayed the same, but the 3DMark05 score dropped back to 1000. Ah well.

Just finished installing and my score was updated to a 3.7... thanks for this!
-
Hi all.
So which one exactly, do i use/select for the Nvidia 135M?
Best,
Ilham -

If it fails to increase your score(s) pick another and try again!
Ok so maybe that's not the best solution, but that's pretty much what I ended up doing...
Ack, why don't we have a D830 owner's thread? -
Alright I found one.
Im on a D630.
I switched from 101.19 drivers to 101.43 and Score is at 3.6.
Improvement from 3.2. -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Hmm, I've noticed a problem.
On 165.12 and the 440 option the display does not come back online when I exit sleep mode. Does anyone else have this problem or is it probably not with the driver? -
A 3DMark jump from sub-1k to 3000 is huge. Can you see the difference when the benchmark is running? I'd pay close attention to make sure settings haven't changed due to the driver swap (resolution, texture detail level, antialiasing, etc.)
-
I was able to successfully install the 165 version drivers for my NVS 140 (I have a D830). I just installed the driver using the have disk method, then pointing the installer toward the custom .INF. I used the geforce 8400gs drivers, and everything is working without a hitch. As I immediately did a clean install of XP pro over the copy of Vista that the laptop came with, I don't have any 3Dmark scores to compare. I can say, however, that it seems to be performing perfectly so far.
-
Just update to the drivers i mentioned before. I think its the 162.15.
Comes out of standby great -
Thank you for the information. -
I'm hoping this can go up....when better drivers come out.. -
anyone else have any reports on good modded drivers?
the stock drivers seem to result in flickering video for me in xp...especially on h264 video. I might dual vista just to see if purevideo helps (apparently there are no drivers for xp in which purevideo is enabled). -
i'm also looking for the consensus on which is the best one to go with now...
-
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
165.12 has been working flawlessly on the 140 under XP for the past couple weeks. 3DMark05 score is just over 3000 and I haven't had any sort of problem with the setup yet.
I don't know about anything under Vista though... -
-
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
My bad, that's 165. 01.
-
When i try to install this I get a "NVIDIA setup couldnt locate any drivers compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now close" message. I'm running a nVidia Quadro nvs 140m on winXP
-
-
Thanks! I wish I knew how to read...
-
So I installed 165.01, choosing nvs 440 when prompted because nvs 140m wasn't listed. It seems weird to have the nvs 440 listed in preferences and stuff, but this driver seems to be working a lot better than the nvs 140m driver on dells website. I had been getting flickering during videos with that driver, but no more with 165.01! Plus my framerates went up a little in guild wars.
I'm on XP Home btw -
As can be witnessed here, I have been having problems with drivers for my 135m on a D630 with XP Home. I am about to install 165.01 on my machine, and I will report back if it doesn't work as it should.

Well, that didn't work. The D630 won't return from sleep mode and every once in a while the graphics get all wonky and switch to the lowest resolution possible. When I switch back to best resolution, I get the same problem as returning from sleep. The screen is on but black.
I'm thinking about returning the computer. Why sell something that doesn't work correctly? -
Try an older driver,I always find the latest ones have glitches, sleep, hibernation, stability problems.
I use laptopvideo2go 97.73 which I found was the only one I didn't get artifacting with the game Stalker,I have kept this one because it has good performance and is stable with pretty much everything.
If you are going to muck around with drivers, you have to be prepared to persevere as they don't all necessarily work properly.
BTW,did you have problems with the standard dell driver? -
Alright, back with one more comment on the 165.01 driver. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but standby and hibernate do not work with this driver; the display refuses to turn back on.
Other than that, this driver is much better than the others I've tried (162.15, 162.18, and the stock one on dell's website). -
I will try 97.73. Hopefully this helps. -
97.73 doesn't exist for XP 32. Are you using Vista? What would you recommend for XP Home? 97.72? 97.77?

Can someone send a link to the most up to date driver for Windows XP?
Thank you. -
Up to you ?
Other than that,I have no suggestions apart from what your doing and trying different ones. -

Can't say I've added lines to the inf before, but I've used different inf's from other drivers and it worked sometimes.
You will have to PM me your email, compressed rar file is 11.2mb -
Can someone post their before and after 3dmark06 scores, I want to be able to compare the updated drivers.
Thanks -
I got bored and started messing around with more drivers from lv2g. I've stumbled across the 158.51 drivers; they seem to be working as well as 165.01 for me (as in videos run smoothly, even 1080p videos), and standby works as well, too!
You can get those here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=13650
When it asked for a missing file, I copied it over from my 165.01 driver folder. No problems with that so far.
update: 158.22 worked well for me as well, with a bit better performance in guild wars.
Btw this was all in XP Home. -
I'm running xp pro and I installed the latest 163.15 (I believe they came out yesterday). I had to add the DEV_0429 to the ini and everything installed fine.
I ran 3dMark05 and scored 3492 or something like that (I plan on running it again). From what the review on the first page of NBR shows, I'm close to his numbers. I assume the difference is the extra 400mhz in cpu power.
I tried hibernate, stand by, shut down, restart, everything runs fine and acts like it's supposed to.
Here are my specs:
Latitude D830
XP Pro 32bit
C2D 2.4Ghz
Quadro NVS 140M @ stock speeds.
2gb ddr2 667mhz ram
120gb 7200 rpm drive

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Well, looks like I'll have to try this 163.15!
I'd like to ask whether your Windows XP is "optimized" for the C2D? My one and only XP benchmark was slightly lower than my Vista benchmark but I had assumed until recently that this was just due to a normal fluctuation in benchmark scores... but now I'm thinking there could be other reasons.
Also, is there is a guide to "modifying" the inf file, or is it something as intuitive as just "adding" the extra line? -
I read the guide on seeing if mine was "optimized" and in the registry it is. The command in the boot.ini file is NOT there but from what i read, the newer C2D don't need that added. (someone correct me if I am wrong)
All you do is add that extra line.
I scrolled down until i found one that almost matched my video card (Dev_0424 I believe it was) i copied that whole line, hit enter to insert a blank line, pasted it in there, and changed the 0424 to 0429. (End up looking like this: %NVIDIA_G86.DEV_0429.1% = nv_G86_1, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0429)
I also scrolled all the way to the bottom of the ini where it lists all the Dev_w/e and what video card it's for, found the 0424 line, copied it, hit enter for a new line, pasted it and changed it to 0429 then change the video card to "NVIDIA QUADRO NVS 140M" (Looks like this: NVIDIA_G86.DEV_0429.1 = "NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M") so it shows nvidia quadro nvs 140m when you go to properties>settings.
