Hi guys,
I was browsing the Dell Community forums, and a Dell employee apparently posted a link to the newest Sigmatel drivers that work with SP1:
http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=en&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R171788&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=235764
Hope this helps everyone!
I'm still waiting for Dell to update the X3100 IGP drivers.

According to IDT (now owners of Sigamtel) you can use an older driver - it just needs reinstalling.
Uninstall old Sigamtel driver, reboot, let Vista install the MS HD Audio driver, install SP1 from Windows Update and then reinstall the Sigmatel driver. -
Thanks for the link! I just updated, and see if it helps with the crackling problem I get after downloading torrents for a while.

This driver was the one that was installed on my machine as shipped. It has had no problems and works flawlessly for me.
-
So has this new driver cured anyone's crackling headphone problem?
And will it work with any Dell laptop? -
yeah will this work with my M1330?
-
deltafx1942 Notebook Consultant NBR Reviewer
this driver works for all dell laptops
-
did it fix the problem? does this driver support vista 64? -
Can you get "Stereo Mix" as an option in the sound controls?
-
what we really need is brand new IDT driver to replace the sigmatel crap.
IDT did much better job fixing the driver then sigmatel. -
deltafx1942 Notebook Consultant NBR Reviewer
IDT didn't make the driver, Dell did. IDT owns whatever is left of sigmatel, but refuses to make or support drivers. companies like Dell, gateway, HP, and others have to make the drivers themselves and provide the support.
-
No - they dont offer the drivers directly as it's the deal most OEM's have wih their providers. They, like other vendors, pass on updated drivers to Dell, they "brand" them and pass them onto us.
Dell dont write the drivers. -
SteveJonesy is correct.
The drivers are built to our OEM specifications.
That said, I just wanted to stop in and say hello. =)
Let me know if anyone is still having problems with installing SP1 on their Dell systems. Or if you have additional questions, I may be able to assist with that as well.
Cheers! -
and starting the audio service froze my Vista 64 bit.
So I uninstalled it, let Vista install the HD audio driver then install new Sigmatel driver again and now it worked.
In conclusion, do not update current Sigmatel drivers. Uninstall Sigmatel, reboot and then install the new driver. -
A little off-topic, but can't resist: Can you tell us if Creative Audigy Advanced MB will ever work on Vista x64? -
will I lose the microphone function in M1330 by installing the driver?
-
No............
-
I got an error message saying the driver wasn't made for my system, this is on XP Pro not vista, I've been looking for a new sound driver cause my audio progs all keep stuttering and crashing. Will Try on Vista next.
-
Thats cus it's a Vista driver hence the thread title - SP1
-
After installing it and see the version of it...v.6.10.0.5614...man, same as the previous one!
=>It's not an update at all, imo. -
version 5614 works fine with sp1 (x64) here but got error message without sp1.
-
deltafx1942 Notebook Consultant NBR Reviewer
yeah this version is the one that Vista supports. however, for some reason, dell isn't posting it on their website. This is also the version I got shipped with my computer
-
5614 is posted on the UK dell support site but not the USA support site...

deputc26 - how did you fix the choppy audio? I updated to SP1 in the past while still using the factory Sigmatel drivers that came with my XPS 1710 but I've been getting choppy sounds since. I then decided to just revert back to non-SP1 because the choppy sound was way too annoying.
For all the rest here - try playing an MP3 and see if you get stuttering/choppy sound (it's quite subtle, not severe). -
squawks:
What video card do you have in your system? -
I've never had this choppy audio issue on my Vostro, but it was still nice to update my driver. My factory driver was 5609.
-
I get the typical sound skipping on my xps m1330 even with the latest driver. Really annoying for a media laptop.
-

i just upgraded to sp1, and i don't get any choppiness in the audio. =)
-
The problem gets more strange. I now have SP1 installed and not going to revert back since I don't listen to audio much and I'm getting used to the stuttering audio in games.
The strange thing about this problem is that audio does not stutter when playing QuickTime .mov files (in fact, no stuttering even when playing 1080p HD video). However, the stuttering is still present when playing music via Winamp (latest version).
Additionally, other video file formats don't appear to stutter, or at least nowhere near as how bad it gets when gaming or playing music. -
Update: I first went into Dell QuickSet and turned off LED universally. I also turned off all effects (e.g. strobe). Then I exited QuickSet.
The stuttering is gone. I'm going to try to isolate exactly what's causing the stuttering - this might help several others. -
squawks:
Some users have been able to resolve stuttering and choppy sounds in Vista by installing the following X-Drivers:

First off Chris - thanks for posting here. Its nice to see at least one Dell affiliated person expressing concern...
As for the X Driver you suggested, why would I 'downgrade' to a 97.54 driver to fix a problem DELL should be taking care of by getting their drivers up to spec???
I am currently dealing with a Sigmatel / SP1 issue and support has not only replaced a motherboard but also a processor. Now they are sending out another GF 7950 card! I mean cmon Dell... lol It's not rocket science.
I look at the driver page for the M1710 and see this old pathetic driver for the Sigmatel card which Microsoft wont even accept. After monkeying around and installing a Sigmatel driver (not meant for my system) I was able to install SP1. Now my sound cuts in and out. Sometimes the speakers are dead and the only way to bring them back is to plug in a pair of headphones then unplug the headphones.
I'm ready to toss this machine to the wind... 3 OS reinstalls and I am BURNT OUT.
SOrry - I'm venting...
Oh and R167846 as well as R170217 dont work - same problem.

I have installed the UK update R171788, it carries ver 6.10.0.5614 but the date is Sep 07 and MS waqnts 12/17/07 or later. SP1 did not show in update after this change. What next?

Is there any difference to the default HD sound in Windows Vista and what the Sigmatel drivers provide?
I decided not to install the Sigmatel drivers on my Vostro 1500 and instead just use Vista's audio drivers. They seem to work well enough. -
Now Im still using the HD Audio and I dont feel any sound quality difference between both drivers. Any experts comment? -
Doesn't work on my laptop. After uninstalling the Sigmatel Audio driver, restart, and install the new Sigmatel Audio driver, I got a "Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed....a problem caused the application to stop working correctly...." error and a red X on the lower right hand corner.
-
dell is just pathetic,
1) how come on DELL US site for M1530, the SP1 ready driver is not posted
2) release an updated IDT driver (no more sigmatel)
3) why is dell so god damn slow when it comes to drivers -
-
i should have never bought 1530, at least now i got my lesson. never again will i buy dell laptop.
alps, sigmatel is just to much trouble that its worth. -
BUMP!
I have a Vostro 1500 which I bought about a year ago. I have never had the Vista Service Pack 1 option appear in Windows Updates and it is certainly not installed.
I am guessing it is to do with the Sigmatel audio issue.
Can someone explain or point me in the direction of the process to sort this out. I have updated fully via windows update in the past so my situation is not as above as I will most likely have updated the driver at some point.
Where do I go from here? Is it worth the hassle? -

Or just uninstall your current driver, reboot and allow the install of the MS HD Audio driver, go to WU, download SP1, install Sigamtel driver again.
-
Or just uninstall your current Sigmatel driver and leave it uninstalled.
I have a Sigmatel sound chip in my computer, and my audio works fine (and probably better) without the Sigmatel driver, just using the built-in Vista audio driver instead. -
I wanted to comment that on my 1420 I was experiencing LESS crackling already then as compared to my first 1420, a unit that used slightly different hardware.
After the driver update, the problem still persists, however it is reaching a tolerable level. I have been able to listen to music for extended periods without much nuisance. Typically, instead of a pop I get the slightest sort of 'skip' - almost like it is a bad mp3 rip. If I hear a crack it is slight. I have had a lot of the same MP3's for years so I know that it is still the hardware / driver causing the issue.
