Does anyone know if you can swap the regular CPU (c2d P6600) for the new i7-720QM without problems? I realized that the 1557 has a new motherboard to accomidate both the i7 and DDR3 RAM...

If you currently have a P6600 (you mean T6600?), you cannot replace it with a 720QM. Period. You need the 1557 if you want to use i7 processors. It *may* be possible to "simply" swap out the motherboard in the 1555, but I wouldn't count on it.

I'm fairly certain the 1555 and 1557 chassis' are identical, so you could swap the motherboard. Frankly, it's not worth the money though.
