I am thinking of "upgrading" my Latitude D810 to a D820. The reason would be Vista. I have installed Vista RC1 on my D810 (2.16 GHz, 1 GB RAM, WUXGA), and although it works fine even with Aero, it seems the pc is getting very hot. I8kfanGUI constantly shows temperatures between 85 and 95 °C, even when the pc is idle.

Can users of a D820 (with M120) tell me if Vista runs fine and "cool"? It would also be handy if D820-users could post some Windows Vista-scores (out of 5).

areo is going to heat up all systems to a degree as its running the 3d hardware nonstop, when your not doing anything, it still has to render the desktop, I'll probably run aero on my desktop pc, but if I ever install vista on my laptop I'm going to leave it off, mainly for battery life, getting a system with more robust 3d hardware would probably run cooler, as integrated intel graphics are barely capeable of running areo, basically your graphics core is chugging away with all its got just to render the desktop.

I would say your best bet is to wait to upgrade after vista is out, then you'll know for sure what works well and what doesnt.

    iceman's right.
i'd say if you can hold back till sometime next year with vista out and new systems shipping with vista preinstalled, you'll be on the safe side.
a d820 most certainly can run vista (check out: http://www.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/solutions/en/vista_pcs?c=us&cs=&l=en&s=gen) with the right components. but with a D810 you have a system which is not too old to run most current stuff

I'd wait till all the new chipsets are out that will make the most of the merom processors plus any new graphics cards that might come along.

You hit it on the nose. The only way to avoid overheating is not use areo
