    Hello All,
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. The system has 2 512Mb ram modules. Now i wanted to upgrade the ram. I don't want to buy it from dell but from some other vendor. How do i check what speed my system ram is running at(533 or 667)?
I heard that I cant mix 533mhz with 667mhz ram. so before ordering, i want to make sure, i get the right module. What might be the approx. price for 1Gb?
Which brand should i go for?
    I stay in India.
    Thanks
    Sharad

You can mix them as you like, only the faster module will run on the speed of the slower one.

As for the brand, I had good experience with Samsung and Corsair.

    Thanks for the reply..
Here the vendor is selling transcend 1Gb ddr2 667Mhz ram for 1350 Indian rupees. Do you think this is a reasonable price? Will there be any considerable improvement if i upgrade from 1 to 2Gb of RAM?
    Thanks
    Sharad

Thats a good price. As for 2Gb, you only need it for a better Vista experience, or for high performance apps, like modern games or graphical stuff.

For graphics, i don have any GFX card. Dell says, they cant add it now to the system. So will 2Gb be useful?
Also can anything be done about the GFX? like sharing more RAM or something, to enable me to play better games.
Can a sound card be added to this? the sound blaster.
    thanks

I'm not too familiar with the integrated stuff in the Inspiron 6400, but most can use more memory.

As for the soundcard you can buy soundblaster x-fi Expresscard.

    thank you Razor2.
also, does the external card play the audio on the built-in speakers? or should i have to connect external speakers always?
I am basically looking at enhancing the sound quality, not trying to upgrade to 5.1 or 7.1 speakers

I would highly recommend Corsair if you haven't odered yet. I am pretty sure that the Dell 6400/e1505 only supports up to 2GB of RAM, so getting anymore than 2GB might be useless.
