I heard that it's possible to upgrade the e1405, e1505, and e1705 from a single core to dual core (core duo) and even upgrade to Merom (when it becomes available)...
is there anytruth to this?
Someone told me they heard it was possible, and they read it over at XtremeSystems, but I haven't been able to find the post.

It seems highly likely. This article says that Intel says that the two chips are to be pin-to-pin compatible. Of course, this does not mean that the two chips would run at the same voltage. If we are lucky, it could be as easy as a simple BIOS update from Dell to get the Core 2 Duo to work on currently existing machines. Dell has realeased BIOSes in the past to account for new releases of the PIII and P4 processor. If I recall correctly, any past Intel CPU that was pin compatible was eventually made truely compatible via BIOS upfrades from Dell. Can anyone confirm this?Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015

Some people dropped in 2GHZ Core Duo in a core solo mac mini, and there was no problem at all.

So, it is possible to upgrade a single core to core duo ?
How difficult is it todo? I am sure it voids warrenty right? Also where would you go to by the Upgrade Proc?
As far as being able to upgrade to Merom, anyone have any detailed info on this? -
I think it is inpossible. -
There are already a few threads about this issue. I'm pretty sure your questions have already been answered in those threads.

As far as we know now, they will be pin-pin compatable, but they have not said if it will work on the old boards or if Dell or the other manufacturers will release a bios update. -
and as far as upgrading from single to core duo 1?

Single core (duo) to Dual-core (duo)...is just a processor swap. The bios should already support it. Single core is basically dual core with 1 processor turned off.

Could you point me to them... I did a search for Merom and returned allot of BS results.
Thanks,

Great, so I could just purchase one of these:

and plop it in the laptop and be good to go? -

That should be all you have to do. But remember that will void your warranty and I would only recommend something like this for an advanced user. Try it at your own risk!

Are there any guides to upgrading notebook proc's online?
I am a newb when it comes to Laptop repairs and upgrades, but I've been building/repairing desktops for years.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

Well if you go on Dell's site they have a service manual showing you how to disassemble your notebook. Other than that...it is just like the desktop.
You have to use thermal paste (Arctic Silver is great).
Since you do desktops, I think the only part you will need to check out is the disassembly part.

Here are two:

Do an advanced search, search just the Dell forum, and search for merom upgrade.
Until a BIOS update comes out, and until the Merom is commerically available, I wouldn't even worry about it.
Upgrade from singlecore to dual to Merom even?
