I purchase this memory from newegg.com. This is it http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134549

Now my inspiron 1520 will not boot up. The capital A on top of the keyboard keeps blinking. This memory is compatible for 1520. I called up tech support and they say the memory is not compatible and the memory causes the motherboard to not boot up. I think that is bs. They also say it voids my warranty since i use a third party memory instead of dells memory. What could be the problem and how can i alleviate this.

First thing, put your original memory in your laptop and see if it will boot...

    1. Try re-seating the dimms. It is very easy to install them and not set them correctly in the slot. I would pull them out and re-seat them. See if it will boot.

    2. If that does not work, put your old RAM back in and see if it boots up. If it does, you could have bad new DIMM's.

    3. If it will still not boot with the old RAM, then something else is wrong.

Jakpro hit the nail on the head. This is really the only way to troubleshoot your problem.

If you put your original DIMMs back in and it still won't boot, you have a much bigger problem on your hands.

I'm sorry to say this, but you might've shocked your board during the replacement process, I would call dell and see what they can do about it. Be careful of how you explain it to them as you might've voided your warranty by performing this replacement.

Just put your original RAM back in and say that it won't start. Don't even mention that you opened it.

They didnt give me any case number or anything. Can i just call back and explain them in another way so i will not void my warranty. And if i void my warranty how much does this cost me to fix the problem.

If you already spoke with them on the issue it is quite likely they put a note in your account regarding this. You can try calling again and you might be lucky...

Don't know how much a new motherboard will cost, dell parts can help you with this and ebay as well.

I dont understand upgrading a memory can shock the motherboard. Thats weird.
I install other memorys on my older laptop and it works fine.

It doesn't take much static electricity to fry a motherboard...

Not sure If my knowledge of PCs help.

But (i forget/never noticed) when Laptops boot don't they "Beep"?
because on PCs the Beep means that your system is "OK"..like...

1 Beeps - System Check, OK
    2 Beeps - Mobo malfunction
3 Beeps - Something else is wrong....

    does this apply to laptops?

It depends on the kind of environment that you are in. If you are standing on a fluffy carpet and you crack open the machine, you have a pretty high chance of doing something bad as opposed to standing on hardwood or tile flooring. That is what anti static wrist straps and mats are for :p

I'd guess anywhere from $800 to $1000. Plus replacing the thing isn't a walk through the park either.

Unless you can find a cheap motherboard on ebay or somewhere else I would suggest buying a new laptop...

Before you panic, recheck your ribbon connectors to your keyboard.

I am assuming that you added in the slot under the keyboard.

Also, closely check any other connections that you might have loosened.

Check any wires that are loose-they should have insulator caps on them. If not, they can be shorting out your motherboard.

Yes, it is possible for a static charge to short out the board, but it is not all that common. You should have touched a bare metal part on the laptop before working on it--or use a wrist strap.

I would be willing to bet that you pulled a wire or connection loose.

If you've done a replacement before (or have taken apart a laptop down to the motherboard), then it should be pretty simple as most laptops are assembled the same way. That looks like a pretty good deal as I was quoted 500 dollars for a motherboard replacement on my old Inspiron 4150 (~6 years old). Needless to say, I just went out and bought a 1520 instead.

skeet_skeet...are you positive that Dell isn't going to work with you on this? I'd not give up so easily if I were you. Call back, and request to speak with a higher authority if necessary. They may well tell you to stuff it, but it's worth a try.
