Hi there guys, i recently ordered one of these XPS 1530's here in australia, it came with the T7500 (2.2ghz). Two days later without any notice the penryn chips became available for no extra charge and was rated at 2.5ghz. Is there anyway to get this change made?? I would have changed the order, but the order already reached the "ship from factory" stage.

If not, i have opted for the dell care plus package, would that help towards getting me this change??

btw the special says " Free Upgrade from Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T8300 to T9300" yet i dont think the T8300 was available here with this laptop??

This is my first laptop purchase as well guys, so i hope all goes well :)

    Welcome to NBR, Goliath101!

I would contact Dell right away to let them know you want to make the switch. If it's in the ship stage but hasn't actually left, you may have to wait a little longer for the new one but at least you won't be having to ship the old one back first.

The new chipset runs faster but is cooler. This means longer battery life and a better overall machine so make that phone call now.

If you find that you waited too long and your pre Penryn unit arrives, don't open it. If it is unopened you should be able to swap it out without some sort of penalty. Don't simply send it back as you will need an RMA number. The fact you purchased complete care should help you but unlike retail it is not a right to swap machines for 3 years.

as of today the laptop was in the "local courier stage" so it should be here within a couple of days. I will have to ring dell in the afternoon and see what we can do as i will be a college all day. Our family has also got a history with dell which i hope will help. Ill report back tomorrow sometime hopefully with some good news :)

Not sure how they do it down under, but in the US you have 21 days to return. They way it usually works is you have to return it then re-order.

for 300mhz i guess its worth it i had the same considerations, but my lappy is the 2.4 and i figured it wasnt worth it due to the proof that penryn doesnt make all that difference, and youve still got to send it back and be without a laptop for quite a while..

but if you can catch it in time, good luck

I would return and reorder. I love the new chip . In runs cooler, battery is longer. But it sure is faster as well.

well the laptop will be used mainly for studying, but also during free time, playing games and watching videos/movies etc. Being that the penryn runs cooler which will increase battery life, im thinking that the change should be made. I have seen the some benchies of the penryn and know that theres not that much performance boost, but its still 300mhz more without having to overclock, which can lead to more heat :s

Do you know what type of fee we are looking at here? Doesnt the penryn run on the same hardware?? or is it not compatible with the current motherboard?

thank for all you input guys, please keep replying as im eager to learn more about my new venture into laptops :)

Boost in performance is not due to increase in frequency but double in die cache.
I wish I ordered later since I could have gotten so much more now.

If you return it under 21 days then there is no restocking fee. (at least in the US)

It's a 50% L2 Cache size dif. Cache sizes for core 2 procs (generally):
    2mb for 5000s,
    3mb for 8000s,
    4mb for 7000s and
    6mb for 9000s,

the 8000 series replaces the 5000 and the 9000 series replaces the 7000 series there are some exceptions like the T7250 only has a 2mb cache.
