    Short answer: no
Long answer: If Intel sticks with Socket P (slim chance) and Dell comes out with a BIOS update for the new processor, then yes, otherwise, no

CPU, probably but its will be limited, the current CPU is Socket P, so I'm assuming there will be at least 1 more generation with that.

You can, but I dont recommend it, the cpu is considered a core component, and will void your warranty if you still have any, you also cant just put any cpu in it, it will have to be one supported by your platform, bottom line with laptops, buy what you need upfront, hardrives and ram are pretty much the only internals worth upgrading. What cpu intensive tasks are you planning on doing? Chances are the 7100 will suit your needs for quite some time.

Mainly for gaming, i just dont want to spend the money then think i should have got the higher end cpu. I like the look of the asus c90 though, and how you can upgrade as easy as you can on a desktop.

I dunno about Vostro 1500, but Vostro 1400's CPU is pretty easy to locate and replace if needed. You can upgrade the CPU, for now up to a T7700 I think.

Intel® Core 2 Duo Mobile Processor T7700 2.4ghz is the highest the vostro 1500 or 1400 will go but they do make a 2.6ghz but I doubt the vostro can handle it maybe possible to go 2.6ghz someone should ask dell, it might be worth it in about a years time depends if intel comes out with something better and Dell offers another $ 599 next year.

I'm thinking of getting the 2.0 ghz vostro 1400 (with xp) ... Mostly I'm just going to be writing .net code, working in sql server, maybe watching some movies and doing a lot of web surfing. I figure 2.0 is plenty for that today. A couple years from now I might want to upgrade to the 2.4ghz processor. I wouldn't worry about upgrading the processor on a desktop pc, but I've not messed around inside laptops much. Any advice would be appreciated.

Penryn will definitely fit, the question is the voltage, if it is the same you will be able to upgrade, if not, well...no chance.

its pointless to upgrade the CPU on a laptop, cos (here in the UK) a T7700 costs around £210 ($420)! If I was gonna fork out that much money on a CPU, id rather just buy a whole new system!

I suppose you could, but most likely not with the latest processor out in the market by that time. Considering the rapid growth of CPU technology, in one year’s time things could be lot different. You also have to keep in mind that even though the CPU contributes significantly to the overall performance of the computer, it may not be the only bottleneck (GPU, HardDisk can contribute more depending on the situation). What I am trying to say is that upgrading the processor of a PC with almost obsolete components, Slow HDD, GPU, RAM etc.. might not worth it. Buy the best affordable processor right now and accept to live with it ;)

if you have a read of the auction its a 2nd hand one advertised "as new" (came out of a working machine)!

there is one guy on there selling new boxed ones for £150, but I prefer to buy CPU's ect from reputable shops such as Dabs.com, Amazon, Scan, Ebuyer, etc. Mainly cos SOME (not all) e-bayers will simply ignore you if you have recieved your item but its faulty, and paypal aint much better!

But with Dabs.com, Amazon, etc you can pay by credit card, then if they try and fob you off, you can simply tell your credit card provider, and they will sort it for you (and even take the shop to court if need be). If your credit card company does take the shop to court then they will be black listed and will be banned from accepting ANY credit card EVER again within your country of residence! Hence why shops will do whatever you want (within reason of course) if you threaten to get your credit card company involved!
