Upgraded to SSHD for inspiron 1520 but the HD don't fit snugly

I have an inspiron 1520 with a 7200rpm HD. I decided to upgrade to a firecuda SSHD

Now i there is a problem with it because i noticed that it doesn't completely fit the bay, then i read that it was because the height of this drive is 7 mm and my bay is 9.5mm. However, i thought it would be no problem as long as the hard drive can lock on the the sata connector. But when i push it in, it doesn't fit in snugly into the connector like other Hard drives did. When i started my computer, it didn't detect any hard drives.

Anyone knows how to solve this? I seen on ebay that there are placeholder to place under the SSHd to make it keep its height, but i don't know if that would actually solve the problem of it not fitting snugly in the sata port and honestly i don't want to waste any extra money. ANd i'm not sure if the fact that the drive don't completely attach to the Sata connector has anything to do with the height cause i made sure to align it right.

Does anyone have an inpspiron 1520 and upgraded to an SSHD or SSD with 7mm height and have this problem too and solved it?

 

I am not 100 percent positive, but I think there is a spacer available to make this fit correctly. good choice on the firecuda. I put one in my inspiron 13 5000 2 in 1, and it made quite a difference in speed for most tasks. Plus I still have my big storage I want for photos and video editing. Goto the local computer store and see if they have one. They may even give you one. sometimes, they come with drives and they just throw them out.

 

YEa that's what it's called...a "spaceR"....honestly a spacer is like $5-$10 extra and i already spent my budget on the SSHD and i'm not sure if i wanna spend more

 

5 bucks? come on man. no biggie. You will be so happy once that drive is working in your device. go see if the local store has one extra hanging around....they may give one to you>

 

yea but the main thing is i'm not even sure if the real problem is due to the height and not having a spacer, that's why i don't want to spend an extra $5 if its not the solution. because i've used a small book as the spacer and it was able to hold up the SSHD, however the SSHd still don't completely click/hug into the sata port like my other HD. I'm not sure if it's the connectors not being compatible? but from the specs of this SSHD that is listed, i'm pretty sure it's supposed to be compatible.

 

it's a standard plug it will fit fine. Did you maybe damage the plug when removing the old HD? There is no "click" when you plug it in...it just slides in.

 

yea when i meant the "click" i mean you can feel when it fits in snug. This still feels loose. ANd also i put back my old hard drive and it fits perfectly and works, so it's definitely not a damaged plug or anything. IDK i just might return the SSHD, was so excited to try it out.

 

Like I said, run to your local store...they probably got them kicking around in the workshop....they may just toss you one. I would do that before anything else. Give the sshd a spin. Mine is awesome.

 

Make a photo of the connector and drive, if you will.

Getting an 'official' spacer is superfluous, imo. Always just use a piece of cardboard, sometimes folded to get the right amount of padding. Also a small piece at the opposite side of the drive's connector, nicely jamming it in place for a good, solid connection.

 

Yes, you can do that. I cannot however. I am a mechanic/custom motorcycle/atv/snowomobile Builder. I don't do things like that in anything. Yeah it would probably work, but I just can't recommend using a piece of folded cardboard when there is a proper spacer available for a couple of dollars, or free most times.
