I was checking out the service manual online here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9200/sm/index.htm
and it seems like several components are moderately easy to upgrade. The most significant one to me is the optical drive. Even though it's a fixed bay, it's easy to remove and replace. Are notebook drives standardized in any way? Could I upgrade to a DVD burner at some point when I need it and they become cheaper?
Also, the CPU is easy to upgrade... Could be nice to go from a 1.6 to a 2.1 when the total price is lower than the curent price difference.
On that note, Can a celeron M notebook later be upgraded to a pentium M?

Hi Fsacj,
Sure I don't see why you could not upgrade the fixed optical drive. When you think about it, if the dam drive was to fail, the Dell technicial should be able to get it out. So I believe you can.
In regards to the CPU upgrade, I am pretty sure that the chipset is different on the Motherboard with the Celeron and the Pentium M notebooks. I also know that Dell will not support you at all if you upgrade the CPU...so be careful when playing around with this. Just save a little more and buy it up front.
Cheers and goodluck. -
Hello,
Just thought i would add on to this post since its about upgrading the 9200. I have one on order, but im wondering if anyone knows if the ATI 9800 and 9700 are of the same main build? I have seen pictures of the 9700 and 9800 and the look about the same. I ask because i was looking at the service manual and the 9700 is not embedded on the mobo, or so it makes it seem and was wondering if a Mobility 9800 could be installed? Thanks -
The optical drive is removable with just a single screw at the bottom. I am not sure if that qualifies as a user upgradable item (remember that you may void any remaining warranty if you do a repair or upgrade that is not considered a user upgradabl item).
