My brother is thinking about getting a Vostro 1500.
Whilst the initial price seems good, upgrading the specs through Dell seems expensive, so how easy is it to install your own memory and hard drive? I am guessing the memory upgrade is fairly simple, but what about the hard drive, is it just a case of getting any 2.5" drive and swapping them over?
Will doing these upgrades invalidate the "3 Year Business Hardware Support - Next Business Day" warrenty?
(This is from UK Dell, if it makes a difference)

Pretty easy.
One DIMM is accessed by removing the panel on the bottom and other is under the keyboard. Still easy to get to.
Hard drive just pops out after taking out two screws on the bottom.
If you order it. you can sign up on DELL DCSE and access all their repair database. -
Whats Dell DCSE and how do I sign up there?

All you need to sign up is your customer number. -
The information on how to replace those parts is also in the online service manual and in the back of the printed manual...

I've found the DCSE manuals have better pictures.
But yes you can also find a service manual for the 1500 here
