Hello everyone, this is my first post here and your forums have been extremely helpful to me. One thing that I haven't managed to find in the many threads I've read is whether or not it is possible to upgrade a Dell E1505 with a 256 mb x1400 hypermemory to a 256b dedicated x1600. I bought the computer without proper understanding of the hypermemory technology, and I now realize that the video processing power I purchased is actually about half that which I had expected.

Thus, I'd like to go one step further on the radeon chain with an x1600 (which actually has 256 mb memory ), but I'm not sure if the E1505 motherboard is even compatible with such a card. It seems like Dell doesn't even have any x1600s in any of their laptops.

I'm hoping that I can simply buy an x1600, remove the x1400, and simply plop the x1600 in...but something tells me that's farfetched. Can anyone let me know?

    Thank you.

I dont think you can put anything higher then the X1400 in the E1505. I believe the mounting arrangement for higher end cards would be different. You might be able to modify the internals a little and mount it but that would take alot of time and you might risk breaking something. In addition, the E1505 power supply might not be enough to run the X1600. I would just return the system or stick with the X1400.

No; you have an integrated graphics card which cannot be replaced.

I don't see why you need 256MB of memory anyways. The X1400 pretty much can play any game on medium or high.

Regarding your question...the answer is basically no.

Yea you could, but it would take alot of work that its not worth it to me. Plus the E1505 might not be able to handle the power of the X1600.

    I appreciate the quick replies.

I suppose I'll just stick with the x1400 then, thank you for the help.

Yea stick with the 1400 or return your system if its still under the 21 day no questions asked policy for a higher end system.

the x1400 is the highest card offered by dell for the 1505 meaning that is the end of the upgrade path meaning no you can can't upgrade to the x1600.

You need bios support for the x1600 wich the 1505 does not have.

you could do anything...you could even build your own spaceship and go to space. the problem is, the original's idea is farfetched and your everyday joe can't do it with the resources and knowledge available to him.

you can return the laptop and buy one with the x1600, or keep the x1400. the x1400 isnt that bad of a card. with enough ram, it could run bf2, and the like, flawlessly on medium settings, which is still playable.

Mostly I'm looking to run WoW on absolute maximum settings without any video lag whatsoever even in 40 man raids. Can the x1400 do that?
