Hi notebookreview community this is my first post. I own a 1.6GHz Core2 Duo Dell Vostro 1500. (GM965 chipset and G8600mGT) ($850)
I have been searching the internet for 4 hours to find a way to underclock my memory. you see my FSB:mem ratio is 3:5 or 800mhz (quad-pumped 200mhz) to 1333mhz (333mhz DDR2 and dual channel) but i'm trying to get it to 1:1 ratio because i think it will run better. The reason y i think this will run better is because of the 1:1 ratio and the lower latency of underclocked memory. To achieve this i want to underclock the memory to 200mhz but i can't find an option in the BIOS or a program to achieve this. so question: 1)Does anyone know a way i can do this? 2)And i also want to know if i do achieve this, will it matter, like in performance? 3)I'm also planning to take apart my laptop to upgrade the cpu to the new Peryn processor (socket P) when it comes out, do i need some kind of thermal glue between the cpu and heatsink when i put it back together(first time doing this)? 4)Is there a disadvantage in running the multiplier at a decimal value (example the Core 2 Duo T9300 at 12.5x vs Core 2 Duo T9500 at 13x)? 5)Is it better to have a ratio of 1:2 based on this website overclock.net/intel-cpus/146820-intel-overclocking-redefined-guide-successful-overclocking.html?

Your memory is not running at 1333MHz. DDR2-667 (or PC5300/PC5400) runs at 333MHz, and transfers data on both the rising and falling edges of the clock signal (resulting in a 667MHz effective clock speed). Dual channel does not double memory speed, only memory bandwidth.

Unless your Penryn upgrade includes a pre-applied thermal compound, you will need to apply your own thermal compound. I have had good experience with Arctic Silver Ceramique. Note you will likely need a BIOS update to support the Penryn processor.

I'm not 100% certain, but I don't think there will be a performance impact from Penryn running at a partial multiplier (e.g. 12.5), since the RAM/North Bridge performance isn't affected by the multiplier. AMD CPU's with integrated memory controllers may experience reduced memory bandwidth by running partial multipliers.

Just to add on to what JN1 said:

At this time, I do not believe there are any applications nor BIOS tweaks/settings that can be access to overclock or underclock your memory and CPU in the Dell Vostro and Inspiron line of laptops :(.

I hope someone comes up with a third party BIOS or something like that to support doing so.
