Hi guys. Was wondering if you guys have upgraded your Nvidia 256mb graphics card for maybe a 512mb one. Any of you guys know if this is safe? I found one on ebay last night and am seriously thinking of buying it. Let me know what you guys think. Im wondering if there would be a heat issue. The guy says its compatible with a e1705.

If you are upgrading for the sake of the memory, no it's not worth it. Besides the Quadro FX1500 is based on the same underlying hardware as the 7900GS in the e1705. There is not a lot of advantage to having more GPU memory.

well what kinda video card do u have right now? bare in mind that is a workstation graphics card not really designed for gaming. itll run games but it was made for 3d modelling and the like.
-
In other words.... The Quadro line of cards run games like crap. When they optimize for 3d modeling they "un-optimize" a bunch of other stuff. It is not worth the money at all.

Awesome thx for the advice. Well in that case what card should I get for my E1705? I really only do gaming on my system and maybe watch some dvds. Oh and just so you know my system has the Nvidia 7800 card. I just learned that there is now a 7900 version. Any thoughts?

Yes, you can order the 7900 card from Dell Spare Parts (which I did back in October) and install it yourself or pay for a Dell tech to do the install for you if you don't feel comfortable taking apart your laptop

Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
The difference between the 7800 and 7900 is not worth the cost, sure the 7900 is a little better, the main benefit is its a cooler running more energy efficent chip but not $300 to $400 better, gaming performance would not get a dramatic improvement, maybe 10 to 15%, its just a refresh of the 7800 on a smaller process. You would be better suited saving the money and applying it to a future laptop with DX10 support.
Upgrading from Nvidia 256mb to 512mb? Possible?
