I am concidering purchasing a new notebook and have my eyes set on the new Inspiron 1520. What I would like to ask is, would this be a significant upgrade from the M170?

The M170 has the following specifications:

    Intel 2 GhZ (single core)
    2gb DDR memory
    Geforce 7800 GTX

I am aware that the increase in CPU speed will be noticable. However I am concerned with the overall performance. Is the Geforce M 8600GT superior to the 7800 GTX?

    Thank you for your help.

No it is not. In fact, 8600GT is slower than 7800GTX under DX9. The only advantage 8600 has is DX10 support. I think it is better for you to wait till 8800 comes out; then you’ll notice a significant overall performance improvement.
