i currently have a 40gb i want to change it to atleast an 80 gb but it says UDMA?? do i have to get a UDMA for it to be compatible or could i get a Sata ata or something like that!!
Basically which 80 gb will be compatible with my inspiron 1000 . thanks!

no, you can't use a Sata drive. You'll need a drive with an IDE interface. UDMA is also known (to my knowledge) as Ultra ATA.
-
so which one of these would you get since they are all around 40 dollars??

Any of the above should be compatible. However, I'm not sure what your bios allows. -
how do i know what it allows all what i saw fo the specs was UDMA
Thinking about this one

I would go with a drive that has 8MBs of Cache and 5400 RPM. The 7200's are better performance, but not knowing how old your laptop is, I'm not sure if the additional power and heat would be a problem.
I would determine what your current drive is to help get you in the right direction. To determine this (in Windows):
start
control panel
system
hardware tab
Device manager
under disk drives, get your current drives serial number and google it. -
Well the link i gave above that might go for is 5400rpm and ti's 8mbs like you suggested and i looked online and i currently have " 40GB 5400RPM High Speed 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive" DELL INSPIRON 1000
so to finalize everything this will work right? I might order it tonight.

P.S. My purpose really is just to bring this computer to a good stable performance with it being about 2.5 yrs old I just wanted to give it some boost starting with the hard drive and then to a 512 ram, I only use this to browse the i-net and surf the web really. No gaming or anything drastic. -
I think that drive would work fine.
Upgrading my old inspiron 1000. Which hard drive?
