So if I get a higher capacity hard drive, I stick it in the enclosure, plug into comp, then clone the drive. How do I actually expand the C: drive partition so that it is able to take advantage of the extra space? Does the hard drive cloner automatically expand that particular partition or what?

Acronis does allow you to expand right then and there. I'm not sure about other tools, but I'm going to guess that most of them do this too.

If you want something free, you could probably do this with a gparted live CD or USB image. Growing the filesystem afterwards, I mean. You'd still need a cloner program also.

Is it true that I'd have to reinstall mediadirect if I get a new drive?

I don't get it. When I clone a drive, shouldnt all partitions remain intact? Ive been reading certain places where mediadirect gets screwed up with an upgrade to a new hard drive.
