I'm thinking about it. Is it worth the upgrade or a waste of money? I'm probably looking at around $45 or $70 to get a 1GB stick to replace a 512mb stick.

I mainly use: internet, AIM, word processing, Winamp, etc.

Things I don't do: video editing (the closest I might do is creating videos out of photo albums with a program), use Photoshop type programs, etc.

    Thanks in advance.

Have a look at how much RAM you are currently using in Task Manager. If you are coming close to filling the current 1 GB, then more RAM will definately help out. Normaly, 1 GB is enough for the majority of tasks in Windows, and since you are using the average range of applications, I don't think you will need an upgrade.

Not much of a difference until you try Vista.

    Thanks for the quick replies.

I'm using Windows XP MCE. In task manager, am I looking at Physical Memory (K)?

Yes, the Physical Memory is what you need to look at. It will display the amount of RAM that is being used by programs, but only the physical module RAM, and not the page file that resides on the hard disk.

Look at PF (pagefile) Usage. (used memory) Then under Physical Memory look at the total-around 1 GB, and available memory.

    Physical Memory:

    Total - 1,046,648
    Available - ~530,000
    System Cache - ~540,000

So far PF usuage at 521mb. It goes up whenever I do more things (load webpages, etc). So far I have Winamp running, AIM, Office Word 07, and I'm browsing through the Internet.

Also forgot to mention that I also use my notebook to watch movies here and there and various video files (AVIs, etc).

From that, it appears you have lots of free memory. I don't think its really needed for you to upgrade. Movies and videos don't really use much memory, but it depends on what yu play them on. Windows Media Player uses a bit of memory, but you have enough free that its more than enough to fill alot of programs.

I just did this exact upgrade to give myself a little extra RAM when I upgrade to vista, looks like you generally use your laptop for the same things I do and I noticed no difference between 1GB and 1.5GB.
