Even if you have different spec, your ram will still work. However, having the same specs is recommended since your notebook will run more efficiently.
The only thing you have to make sure is whether your notebook takes DDR or DDR2.

you guys cant buy a 1gb stick to have 2gb because right now you have 2x512 sticks in there so if you wanted to upgrade to 2gb you would have to trash/sell those and buy 2x1gb sticks for 2gb. Other than that manufacturer doesn't matter just make sure you get the 667mhz stuff

yea you only have TWO slots!

Currently they don't offer 1GB as a single DIMM slot, only 2x512mb, so you will have to go with 2x1GB or 2x2GB as an upgrade

Just remember if you have xp, your max is only 3gb. Only vista will take 4gb.

correct if you ordered 1gb you will get 2 512 sticks not a single 1gb one..

you can use any 667 ram you want together but.. you will loose the dual channel mode when doing so.. i tried this in the wifes toshiba by leave a 512 stick and adding a 2gb one... her windows score fell A LOT.. her memory score dropped almost in half to like 1.8 i think .. i added in the 512 like stock and it went back up to 3.5... take it for what you will but apparently vista likes dual channel imo

    can you elaborate on this?
dual channel means you need 2 sticks of the exact same capacity and speed?
    such as 1gbx2 or 512mbx2?

of the exact same speed timings brand sometimes etc... brand is not as big of a factor but if one of the timings is off it will not see it as dual channel so basically matched pairs.. now this DOES NOT mean you have to spend more for those dual stick "kits" you see.. as long as you get two of the same chips they will be fine... ram is so cheap now just buy 2 gb's and be done.. newegg has 1gb sticks right now for like 30$ each for 60$ you have 2gb's dual channel..

some will say here it doesnt make a different but i saw the windows score drop drastically when not in dual channel mode

XP64 bit can address all the 4 GB. Any 64 bit OS can.

The WEI rating isn't in anyway related to the real world performance. Besides, the score fell since the larger stick was in the DIMM1. If you put the 2GB module in the DIMM0 your WEI score would go right back up.

As for dual channel, you can have unmatched pairs without too mcuh of a loss in performance. In case of different speedds, the RAM runs at the lower clock. In case of differently sized sticks, they run in Asynchronous dual channel mode.

You can't have asynchronous dual channel mode in a notebook :)

Not too sure about dell but i believe the asus notebooks do it. The ones that come with 512mb or 1gb on board.

But yea as someone pointed out. Your going to need a 2gb kit because both slots are already taken. Dell puts in 2 512mb sticks from the factory.

I'm going to be doing the same thing only difference is that i'm going with a 4gb kit.

    what if i take out one of the 512MB DDR2 667 SODIMM and install 1 x 2GB DDR2 667 SODIMM. This way i have both slots with 667 SODIMMS with a total of 2.5GB 667 DDR2 for my 1330
