I am considering purchasing an inspiron e1705 - it seems like the best deal for a gaming notebook in my pricerange.

However, their markups on ram are ridiculous. I was thinking of just buying it with 512 megabytes and buying some DDR2 so-dimms on newegg. However, I was told that the dimms in dell notebooks are proprietary, and standard modules would not work.

I am guessing this is B.S., but can someone confirm or deny it for certain?

    Thanks,
    Nick

Complete BS. If your getting a E1705 then look at DDR667 200-pin modules from newegg and its the same stuff that dell uses.

Thought so. It was a Fry's sales rep. I was there to examine the build quality on various laptops, but the sales people were like sharks.

He was trying to sell me this $2000 hp with much worse specs than the Dell. It had a go 7400. I told him I could get a dell with a 7900 gs and comparable specs for $500 less - so he brought out the anti-dell bs.

The look on his face was priceless when I told him my grandpa is from India, after he had said "I wouldn't like talking to an Indian person every time I call tech support".

Overall, it was an amusing experience.

    HAHAHAHAHAHHA...

sorry, but fry's doesn't have sales reps, they have a bunch of people that run away from you when you have a question. 100% the worst place to buy anything.

the only thing fry's is good for is going in to see the actual product in person, then go buy it online, cuz you'll get it cheaper and you won't have to deal with the idiots there.

plus half (or more) of the stuff they sell breaks (have you seen the return line?).

Yeah, I was just there to examine the actual products. Sometimes their deals can be good on CPU/Motherboard combos and the like, but these days I pretty much only use newegg.

They are mainly in California. There are none in New York. You can find a list of their locations on frys.com.

This is what I'm plannin on doin. I went to Fry's today and the same RAM im lookin at at their online store is $20 more instore. So when I have the money, I'm gunna order it online. $160 + S&H and Tax is much bnetter than $350 from Dell.

Personally, I've never had a bad experience at Fry's the one near me (GA) is really nice, and yes there is a Cafe.

In the past, fry's has been great for me. I actually used to look forward to paying them a visit. The selection is very large. I usually go there to get free things after rebate. One time I got a 4-port hub from them for free. Besides their deals, it is a bit marked up.

I admit, this was my first bad fry's experience. I will probably keep going there, though.
