I am strongly considering upgrading the wireless G card built in to my 1720 with one of the Draft-N mini pci cards on Dell's website, but I have a feq questions. My DSL modem/router was supplied by my ISP and is an 802.11G router. If I have one of the Draft-N cards in my laptop, will I get any extended range from my 802.11G based home network? Also, will upgrading the wireless card with a newer one from Dell violate my warranty?
-
i dont think it will violate the warranty. I mean Dell teaches you how to do it on their manuels.

You won't get extended range with your laptop unless you have a draft n router. If you are operating on G you will probably have the exact same range(A draft-n does not have any more benefit unless you have a draft-n router).
-
u will get extended range if ur router is mimo eg the wpn824

Like the guys above said, you need the KIT, a wireless N router, and a wireless N adapter.
Unless you have a very big house, or like to browse the internet from across the parking lot, you shouldn't really need the N technology! -
( N technology router)
PS: N technology wireless internal cards have 3 aerial wires as appose to 2 (A,B,G technology) -
If at all possible get the Atheros or Intel wireless-n minicards. You don't have to buy them from Dell. I have found the Dell branded wireless minicards (1390 in particular) based on chips made by Broadcom to have relatively poor reception.
From what I've read the Atheros is suppose to be the best but it's not as easy to find as the Intel 4965 card. -
NOT!!! The range is greatly improved even if running in mxed mode(G-N) like we do and we easily hit 300mbps in our house and laptops w/ d-link adapters.
no it won't negate your dell warranty- who's gonna tell them -

Why??
My last one was as big or bigger and the mods didn't say a word.............. -
