It might have been an advertisement on IGN. Sounds silly, but sometimes you can get these really annoying ads on big web-sites, that are Flash and make noise and play video without even asking you.

If it wasn't, tell us more about your problem.

well i tried going back to the website after restarting my comp and it didn't make the noise anymore
but it sounded like it was coming from below the keyboard
i guess it just scared me and i wanted to make sure my laptop wouldn't blow up or anything lol

Hmmm... if you're sure that your speakers were off at the time, then it's really questionable what would cause that sound. Only things that make sound in a laptop are fans and the hard drive. The PC Speaker may have gone off as well, but it's unlikely if you were just visiting a website.

@wannabeapilot - It isn't required that you see the same ad again, or an ad at all when you revisit that page. Lots of times, a site like IGN will store a cookie with ad info, so you don't have to see ads again after seeing it once. Of course, when you clear out your cache, things go back, and you may get another ad. No way to predict those.

I would suggest using Mozilla Firefox 2.0 + Ad-Block Plus (an Add-On). This way you never have to see an ad again...I don't!
