There have been a few who have seen this when reinstalling:
    1) In some random install, you receive a blue screen of death, go into Bios and under installed deviced, look at SATA. If it says it is set as AHCI, change it to ATA. You'll have to disable one other device...it tells you...and then come back to this and disable it. Save and exit.
    2) If you can boot now, you are running in ATA mode which is slower than AHCI (25 sec boot as opposed to 15 secs).
    This is fixable.
    3) hit start, enter in the search/run "regedit" without the quotes.
    4) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msahci
    5) Double click on "start" and change the setting from 4 to 0
    6) reboot, go back into bios and reverse your settings. Windows should continue to boot correctly now.

You don't need have to disable AHCI. Use the following instructions. They are for the M1330, but should almost be the same for the Inspiron:

    1. Look for the Dell Drivers & Utilities disc that comes with your M1330.
    2. Copy the I386 folder to a USB memory stick. Make sure that the I386\R154200 folder is copied, it has the important drivers.
    3. During the “Where do you want to install Windows?” step, insert the USB memory stick and click “Load Driver.” The Windows Vista installation will scan the memory stick and automatically display the driver that applies to your M1330.
    4. Click [Next] and that’s it! You should now be able to successfully install Windows Vista on your M1330.

Reformatted and did this. Phew thanks!

Btw. New problem. On a clean install when i go to install media direct it says "this system is not supported by this reinstallation dvd. Installation will now exit". And in my computer there is only one partition (c :) that is 145 gb.

Is it because i might have somehow accidentally deleted the partition for media direct?

You have to reformat the hard drive and create partitions using the media direct cd (boot to the media direct cd), and then follow the same procedures in reinstalling windows. Make sure to select the correct partition (C: ) when installing the OS.

You can actually make use of the Windows Anytime Update which can be ran through windows update in the OS. just select Ultimate, but make sure you enter the Ultimate product key when prompted.

Yep, just load the Windows anytime Upgrade disc and then select the OS the you need and enter the correct product key so that you can install it properly.

This really needs to be PINNED because I post this same exact thing (written by me) at least once a day here...

That problem is because the OS can't see the drive, but it does because you installed it...right? Typically, you assign RAID drivers and stuff so you can install on that drive because it doesn't see it...but this gets confusing, because it actually sees it. When it asks you where to install, you'll see an option to load drivers - you want to go to support.dell.com and download the Intel Matrix Storage Manager and load the drivers in there prior to installing. The problem is you need a special AHCI driver, and not the generic Microsoft one. Yes, this is really frustrating and I was the first person to post about this in the forums - I called Dell and they had no idea what I was talking about, I had to figure all of this out on my own...

If you don't know how to do this, or anything like that...and don't mind taking a *small* performance increase for ease just go into your BIOS and see the HDD operation mode from AHCI to ATA and then you can install Vista using ANY disk!

The direct download link for Intel Matrix Storage Driver is here:

    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=41&fileid=205611

If you are using a x64 version, the direct download link is here:

    http://support.us.dell.com/support/...eid=R154201&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=205616

Oh, and this applies to the 1420, 1520, 1720, m1330, and I assume the m1730 as well ;)

I' goiing to edit this to include install the Intel ATA storage matrix. that should have been in there. You can avoid this like many say by installing the drivers via thumbdrive or similar during a vista install, but this works just fine. The 4 to 0 just sets the system up with the standard stuff but not the newer intel stuff. Thanks for all your feedback everyone.
