    hi, wonder would this be possible I have an older Inspiron 5150 (ide only) I dont believe it has sata hardware or drivers support. But would I be able to boot off an sata drive if I put it in a 2nd drive caddy (where the cdrw slot is currently)?

    You will need a drive caddy with some sort of PATA to SATA adapter... and not just that; it'll need to interface with whatever PATA connector your old optical drive had. Definitely possible, but probably hard to find parts.
