Not sure if im in right area but here we go....

    I have an older camcorder,a sharp vl-h870,it has an s-video plug,i have a dell inspiron e1705 laptop,it also has an s-video adapter.
Since the camcorder records to Hi8 tape,i wanted to plug the s-video from camcorder to laptop and play/record to hard drive to burn to a dvd or cd.
from what ive been reading,am i understanding the s-video on laptop is an output only?Is there anyway to get the video from the camera to the laptop for recording to the cd/dvd?i guess i would be converting analog to digital,so i was thinking maybe software since my laptop is fairly new.Trying to avoid having to buy an external device to do this.
Maybe it isn't as simple as i was hoping it would be

The S-Video on Inspirons (or in any other notebooks for that matter) is out put only!. You can use the fire wire port if your camcorder supports it. If not most probably USB. Or you can buy a USB video capture unit.

You need a TV Capture card to capture video assuming your camera is not digital.
