I recently obtained an old Inspiron 1100 which works fine. However, weight issues make it a pain to bring anywhere. I have no need for battery power. Is it a problem to simply leave the battery at home and run solely off of A/C?

Well technically your system will work w/out the battery attached to the system. I haven't noticed any problems so far, well I'm not really that sure on this...

yeah dont worry it will work fine, though remember to keep clicking Ctrl+S every 5 sec, that way if there's a powercut yout wont lose your work

now thats a good point to take into consideration, maybe buy an el cheapo battery for it? -

It was a free laptop, I would never have bought one this heavy for this exact reason. -
No problems without the battery plugged in. Will act just like a desktop.

Thanks for the help everyone, I appreciate.

the one thing it could do is drain your cmos battery. that battery keeps your time and date, and all of your bios settings. When it dies, you will need to set the time and date every time your pc starts. it will die in a matter of a month with no battery in it.

A notebook is essentially a computer with a built in power supply.
Or a computer PC is a notebook without the built in battery -
It'll work fine. I actually discovered in a local chain store here in the UK that the Vaio's, Asuseses... etc, that they had running on display were all sans battery, I imagine as a savvy marketing tactic to alleviate any excess weight from the machine to potential buyers.
Of course, you're not really supposed to pick them up to check out their connectivity options on the sides/back to find this out (as this sets off the alarms...) but hey, who puts down several grand on a Vaio without making sure it's really what you want, right?!
Haha. -
