So I was wondering... if the MD partition is a super slim XP install and hence has most of the extraneous services and features left out, doesn't it make sense to make it a foundation for eeking the very best performance out of your system for game playing? That is if you can get the game to play on it?
I was thinking of setting it up for this, but before possibly reinventing the wheel wondered if anyone else had ventured this way...

I actually tried playing Halo and CS 1.6 on it this morning, but it didn't work, they left alot of stuff out of C:\Windows...
If you copied over missing files from another XP install, it should work. -
how big is XP? could you just install it to the media direct partition? has anyone tried that?
-
XP is less than 700mb, so it should fit on there, even if it didn't you could always resize the partition to give it more room.

sweet. if the media direct button is programmed by the bios to run winload from the media direct partition, then wouldn't it run whatever operating system you put there? so, to make a dual boot machine you could delete the media direct partition and replace it with xp? then the media direct button becomes an xp button. hehe. i would try this if a had a copy of xp...

I've heard you can install GRUB on the partition, but I haven't actually tried it.
If that worked, you could set it to load any OS(s) you wanted.
I've got a few copies of XP Pro lying around, I might try it out. -
i was thinking this too. you could have the windows button and the linux button.

I am prety sure I read that some people have accomplished just that (using MD button to load some other OS).
The thing I was actually trying to do was to utilize the slim down XP that is used for MD to play games by having as little OS overhead as possible... that it seems, is not going to work. -
I think you can play very small small games but not hi fi ones which use DirectX and stuff.... That too it would require all the windows dlls it will make use of for the game...
Using Media Direct partition to play games...
