    Hi,

I received a new Vostro 1400 last week and I'm having some issues with internet speeds. Basically it's really slow. I'm not 100% if it's just my wirless connection as downloading files doesn't seem overly slow though I'm not certain on how it compares to other comps on my network. I've tried both IE and Mozilla and they're both slow while other computers on the Network are working fine. I thought I discovered the problem as I realised I had an "a/g/n" card while my router is "b" so assumed I just had to upgrade the router. But I've just tried the internet in safe mode with networking and it's much faster so I'm confused as to the exact problem. I realise the routers probably worth upgrading anyway but does anyone have any idea what my actual problem is? It's been like this since I first switched on the pc. I don't think it's a case of updating drivers as the computer's so new and the fact it's working in safe mode - I assume it's probably a setting somewhere but I don't know where!

Also, does anyone have any advice regarding a new router as I don't want to get one that's not compatible with the other computers on my network, I'm thinking of getting a "b/g" router as the other computers are all "b" or "g" and our internet connection isn't fast enough to take advantage of "n". I was quite surprised my computer worked at all with a "b" router but I don't really understand how any of it works so they may work fine together for all I know.

As an aside I'm thinking of reinstalling windows having read some messages on here advising it, do people think this will have much effect on performance and could this possibly solve my problem.

I'd appreciate any help anyone can send me. Thanks very much!

Sorry, should've said, I've already given that a try and I don't think it'd work in safe mode if that was the problem.

it is a vista problem, on most routers all you have to do is just restart the router, but some routers have really bad problems with vista.

If it works ok in safe mode, then looks to me like a software issue. If you are using a firewall, spyware removal tool or a virus guard then turn them off and try.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I've tried disabling McAfee and my Windows firewall but it doesn't seem to be helping at all.

If it's a Vista problem as Noiren's suggested then what are my options? It's an old router so would it simply be a case of buying a newer router or should I check compatibility. Also would a g router work with the b wireless cards that are also on my network?
