Hey all,
I was fiddling around with my 1520 the other day (as that's what I do best) and was curious to see if the function key could provide any more functionality (get the pun??? Huh, huh...do ya!?!?!? Ok, that was a bad joke, but anyway...) and I found several keyboard shortcuts that for some reason, DELL doesn't put on their keyboard. The ones I found were:
Fn + End = Mute Volume
Fn + Page Down= Volume Down
Fn + Page Up= Volume Up
Fn + F10 = Eject CD/DVD Tray
Fn + Esc= Put Computer to Sleep
What do you guys think?? Why do you think Dell doesn't put it on the keyboard??

Eject didn't work for me.
-
None work with my m1330
-
my opinion, in order for those shortcuts to work, need to install the dell quick set. because i have tried if the quickset is not running, those keys are not working.
-
Dell added these shortcuts to my notebook (in sig).
I don't use them though. I use the media buttons on the front of the system. -
-
Eject works for me! Awesome! thanx
If I knew how to rep people I would rep you.. ;-) -
In systems that don't have the media buttons on the front of the system, there are icons for volume control, etc. on the keys you mentioned.
The functionality is still there in the Quickset utility, even though the keys have been left blank in favor of the front panel buttons. -
Quickset has to be activated, really? I looked around quickset and the only hotkeys I could find were those already in there and labeled on the keyboard by dell (f1, f3, f8, up, down, etc.)...
That's odd that it only works for the 1520.... -
Interesting. On my 1720, the following work:
Fn + Page Down= Volume Down
Fn + Page Up= Volume Up
Fn + F10 = Eject CD/DVD Tray
Fn + End = loads the calculator (and an icon for this is printed on the End key)
Fn + Esc= Have not tried this one yet. -
Open QUickSet and click on Hotkeys....

Metamorphical Good computer user
Eject CD and the one that brings up the battery meter are my two favorite shortcuts.
-
I don't have Quickset installed and these work on my works 1501. Mind you, all the corresponding keys also have icons on them supporting the functionality too.
Another one that I see here printed on the keyboard that doesn't appear to have been mentioned so far is 'Fn + F2' to switch wireless signals on and off. Quite useful that one for the battery conscious amongst you. -
First four shortcuts work on my Vostro, I don't want my PC to sleep though so I haven't tried the last one in the OP's list.
Nice to know about the extra undocumented shortcuts though. I do have quickset on this system since I didn't reformat (yet). -
Great Find! Thanks!
-
this has been on dells for a while now...its just been replaced by the hardware buttons...but are still hardcoded to the original places....Fn+esc does sleep like it used to do in older dells.
-
It depends on your version of Quickset.
