Are these turning out to be less expensive than the inspirons?

Depends on what you're looking for. Some of the higher end configs still up the cost. The Vostro is probably better right now for low-mid range configs since most of the Inspiron coupons aren't working anymore. The 200$ + EPP discount was pretty win when it stacked

The Vostro(s) are a pretty good deal right now if you can get them with a EPP. Plus they look a million times better than the Insprions.

If only they had decided to make matte screens an option, I would have been sold on them instead of the Macbook Pro.

Deciding on whether to upgrade to the 8600m GT and downgrade my RAM or keep it the way it is...I'm not a big gamer, and I currently run Vista with 1 gig of RAM on my desktop and hate it..dunno what to do..any help? :(

Nope. Build your vostro with some high specs and it ends up being more expensive thanks to the $225 coupon for the 1520.

Two different ways to look at that...

Well, since you're not gaming (and im guessing not running any high-demand simulation programs) that you won't really NEED the 8600m GT, and the extra gig of ram is really nice for Vista..

On the other hand, RAM is always easy to upgrade, and cheaper to buy from somewhere else such as newegg than dell. The GPU is non-upgradable.

Its really best to have both, but.. I'd personally get the GPU upgrade and buy the ram seperately later if I couldn't get both right now.

Yeah...I'll probably get the GPU and upgrade the ram later, just the horrible, horrible experience of this current desktop with 1 gig of ram and vista...it's just... :(

im wondering what the V's look like in person, i like the all black.

as for it being cheaper, doesnt appear that way to me. i priced out a similar 1400 to my sig, and it was up there.

I would get the GPU. Ram can be upgraded at any time, and its pretty cheap these days. GPU on the other hand can not be upgraded at all, so what you choose is what you are stuck with until you get a new laptop.

I think it's mostly cheaper compared to the 152 1's, which I upgraded from.

Is that GPU good? Like good enough to play Bioshock if I decide to stop being a console gamer? :p

On the canadian site you can get XGA without truelife. Might be worth making your order by phone and asking for it, if you don't mind XGA, as the canadian and american laptops are both assembled in the same place.

edit-Should mention this option is on ALL laptops, 14"/15"/17". XGA+ is offered in matte for the 17".

if you stick with the mid to low end stuff its cheaper, i saved 200 on my computer and I had a 350 coupon on my 1520. but i sacrificed a little. I have a 120 gb hd instead of 160, but i also got the bigger battery and better screen res on the vostro. According to the rep the battery doesn't stick on of the back but i guess time will tell.

the rep also said I was his first to order...he had to ask his super a lot of the questions I was asking. Big plus was that I called 3 times and all three times they were Americans and it made it much nicer to talk to.

Oh and student discount (student epp) doesn't work, they don't stack but he did say students should be getting the vistro soon.

The lowest-end vostro systems are a little cheaper. Anything with reasonable hardware is coming out to be the same, or a little more than the inspirons with the same features.
