I am either really lucky, or people exaggerate about the problems they have with Dell. I recently ordered a 1420 and the ship date was supposed to be August 6th. However, the laptop shipped early and I received it on July 24th, yesterday. I didn't have any problems with it at all, except the speaker grill is coming off a bit, but no big deal. I just bent it back down. Also, I just talked with a rep about the remote, and there were no problems at all. Took me about 10 minutes and the remote is being sent to me via next day. All in all, I've had a great experience so far.

Are you getting the remote for free?
-
Congrats!
When did you order? And what color did you get? -
That is with the Santo Rosa chip set, right? What GPU did you get?
-
It sounds like you don't have the highest standards though seeing as how your not really bothered by the speaker grill comming off
-
I'm very happy too...ordered my Latitude D630 last Wednesday. Was given an expected ship date of 8/2--and it arrived yesterday! Haven't noticed any problems with it so far.

I would argue he has reasonable standards as he's paying about a grand for a mass produced laptop through a global warehouse. With all that could go wrong along the production line, a speaker grill giving you trouble is pretty good. I'm thrilled to death with my new 830 if it weren't for the screen. But Dell's taking care of that, so what more can I ask for? Glad to hear you like your new lappy man.
-
I don't think that my standards are too high just because I expect a laptop not to have any faults when i purchase it
-
lordofericstan Notebook Evangelist
what part number is the remote you are getting?
-
Well, some of us do think your standards are too high, for a mass produced consumer device.
-
mtylerjr,
Well put! anything mass produced will have minor imperfection, if I was buying a one off hand crafted item, I would expect perfection, but would also pay the rather large price for such a item. -
BTW, congrats, infamous24!
Lucky duck. -
yea my expected ship date way Aaugust 8th and it shipped today. fedex says i'll get it tomorrow by 4:30. I'm so glad I didn't get dhl for shipping
-
mattireland It used to be the iLand..
It's nice to hear that they've finally managed to please someone...
Unfortunately, this is far from what I've heard.... -
hmm well maybe you should start reading the threads about more than negative stuff and you would see that more people are pleased than upset with their dells
-
Dell pleases most of their customers. If you think that the vocal minority of people who post online about problems is representative of Dell's overall quality, you're sadly mistaken.
Very few people come on here and tell us they're totally satisfied with their laptop, but plenty of people come here to moan about "my headphones don't sound quite as clear under the full moon as they do every other day." -
Well, some of you are of course entitled to your opinions
. But I don't see how the terms 'mass produced' and 'consumer device' justifies faults.
-
I think that some people luck out because of the people who cancel their orders, freeing up some systems for immediate shipping.
So, the best thing to do is make up a bunch of things to complain about, exaggerate them, and get other people to cancel... HEY WAIT A SECOND.... -
Oh cr** their on to our evil scheme.. RUN GUYS!
-
lol some dell retard canceled mine and ended up having to reorder the the exact thing, but mine is still way early so its weird how dell works. Maybe they only give cool ppl their computers fast lol

I am also getting the remote free of charge with next day shipping. As for the speaker grill, I fixed it, I just had to push firmly on the spots it came up on, and it is perfect now. -
Oh ad one more thing. I actually like DHL now. They came by to drop it off, but no one was home since it was about 12:30. The same guy came back at 5 to try dropping it off one more time since no one was home the first time. That's the first time I've ever heard of something like that happening. I was pretty excited, since I didn't want to wait another day.
-
I also got my 1420 yesterday and couldn't be happier. Sometimes I jiggle the battery in the back to test my happiness, and it never has any effect
-
What is the part number for the remote?
-
This mentality voiced by others as well makes very little sense logical sense. Mass production and cheap costs do not justify defective and flawed products. Any time a consumer purchases an item, he has an implicit contract from the producer that the item is of absolute effectiveness of that which was advertised.
This false analogy you guys are repeating is ridiculous. You pay $2000 for a notebook if you want better parts, better features. You pay $1000 for a Dell knowing it won't be as aesthetically pleasing as the more expensive laptop or more reliable. That doesn't equate to acceptability of defects. -
I am not sure of the party number for the remote. I just told the rep that I was supposed to get a remote that controls the media center and fits int he expresscard slot and she knew exactly what I was referring to.
For those who have the battery problem, is it with the 9 cell? When I have the 9 cell in I can move the batter ever so slightly. But as I said before, the speaker problem is fixed and nothing else is wrong with it. If I showed you what the problem originally was, most of you would say it isn't a problem at all. -
I'm not sure if this would help but Stella had ordered FW331 for the infrared remote control
-
I didn't have a part number for the remote. All I told the rep was that it fit in the expresscard slot and controlled the media center and she knew what I was talking about.
-
i think it is 412-0961? but thats off the top of my head..someone might want to check on that.
-
Everything has defects. Everything. It's just a matter of scale, and what margin of error you consider acceptable. The margin is bigger with cheap, mass produced items like this. If the grill was falling off, I'd be a little annoyed. If it's just loose.... meh.
-
I'm glad you got your 1420 early. I ordered one on July 13. It was supposed to be shipped today (7/26) but I got a phone call saying it was back orderd until 8/2. Waaaah! I want my 1420.
I ordered the Green cover.
Very Happy Customer
