I have a dell studio 1537. Sometimes when my fan kicks on, it makes a wierd grinding sound. I checked for dust but its pretty clean. I have had this laptop since December 20. 2008.

    Your help is apreciated

Grinding is definitely not good. You might want to talk to Dell about getting a new heatsink/fan unit. They're not that hard to replace at all.

I experienced something similar with my old Compaq back in the day. Kinda sounded like there was a piece of paper stuck near the fan and the blades would glance across giving a 'grinding' sound. I suspect it may be the fan, could be faulty. Like Mastershrrom mentioned, should be an easy fix.

Mastershrum to replace the heatsink/fan it looks like you have to remove the cpu and the gpu heatsink. Sometimes the noise happens and sometimes it doesnt when the fans on its wierd.
Mastershrum if you have ran a 3dmarktest 06 i would like to know your results if its okay with you. Thank you

The fan and heatsink are all one thing, so they come off together. And you don't have to remove the CPU, although removing the heatsink/fan unit will allow you to remove the CPU if you wish.

I have not run 3dMark 06 yet. I'll post my score if and when I run it. ;)

If you have any trouble or are hesitant to replace the heatsink, I'll make a youtube video for you on my Studio. Just post here and PM me. :)
