I had the same exact problem...except I had headphones on...I could have sworn my ears were goign to bleed. At my office they guys in a different room could easily hear the noise coming from my earbuds...ridiculous.

Go to the volume icon and I go to the very right volume scroll, I think it says "PC speaker" (if you don't see it go to the advanced options...sorry, I'm booted in Vista right now or else I'd know how to orient you better), you have to mute it...turning down the volume doesn't affect the volume of the beep for some reason. It worked for me. Good luck.

Thanks, it worked for me too. I have a vostro 1500 running xp. The sound card is sigmatel audio. Following are the steps
    1) go to volume control
    2) go to options
    3) go to properties and select playback
    4) at the bottom of the list (I have) pc speaker - check it
    5) then in the volume control it shows the pc speaker - check mute
