My refurb e1705 shipped with xp pro. I would have preferred media center, but it was a great deal. I tried to hook up a USB tuner box to capture some video and the audio would not play. When I cap the video the audio is there, but when I try to watch tv...no audio. I had the same issue with my 9100 and figured that this newer model will have solved that audio in problem. They haven't.
So I chat with customer support:
Me: "I am trying to hook up a usb capture device/TV tuner. I cant get any audio. When I plug in the audio cable, the sigmatel knows it, and asks if it is a microphone or line in. Then thats it. The device is a pixelview play tv usb 2.0 ."
Agent (Kumar_01123610): "May I know which operating system is used in the system?"
Me: "xp pro"
Agent (Kumar_01123610): "John, the TV Tuner will work in the system only if the Operating System is Media Center PC."
Me: "So how much is an upgrade?"
Agent (Kumar_01123610): "It is not possible to upgrade the system from XP Pro/Home to Media Center as the Media Center needs few other hardware, which can't be possible once the system is sold. Media Center PC should be ordered while purchase, so that all the required hardw"
Me: "I bought it refurb? So I have to return it to get media center? What is the hardware?"
Agent (Kumar_01123610): "When you are ordering for the Media Center PC, then the required hardware will be automatically added to the system.
Me: "what type of hardware?"
Agent (Kumar_01123610): "The required hardware will be the advanced technology compliable motherboard. Then the Video Card and the Audio Card that are compliable, even the TV Tuner card."
Now I think this is a load of baloney. Is this true? Could Dell actually have 2 motherboards they use for the e1705 based on the OS?
I have seen in the inspiron audio forum a fix that puts the audio through the speakers, but at an incredibly loud, uncontrollable level.
Anyone have any ideas? I may have to return the laptop and scan the outlet again for a bargain...with media center on it.

It looks like you got screwed by DELL.

AFAIK, TV tuners only require MCE to work. I don't think there is any special hardware (unless you are getting an internal tuner). As long as the TV tuner is USB connected, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

That is the weird thing. I have been capturing video with win 98 and Xp for years...before MCE was even invented.
I cant figure it out. -
Is that happend when u do the play back? which type of file does it record to?
I think the problem might be the codec audio video support software. try install this and remember to choose(check) all the plug-ins in the installation box which u will notice while install.

it seems that I can capture...only cant hear the sound while doing it. The sound shows up in the capped video.
Cheap and lame. -
Try calling dell. It might also be a driver issue
