I am going to buy an Dell e1505 within the next week but can't decide on whether to upgrade certain hardware. Here is what I am getting and the upgrades I can go for right under it:
Duo T2300 (2MB Cache/1.66GHz/667MHz FSB)
Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005
15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA Display
1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz, 2 Dimm
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950
* Upgrade to the 128 Graphics Card
60GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive
* Upgrade to 60GB 7200rpm HD
Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem
24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini Card (54Mbps)
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
Plans of use:
I plan to mostly use this laptop for programming (Java, C++, Perl). I will be multi-tasking when doing so. For games, I play Warcraft 3, Civilization 4, and the Sims 2.
Any opinions on which upgrade would be better for what I need it to run?
Keep in mind that I only really have $1000 to spend on it and with each upgrade, I lose enough money to drive for a week.![]()

Of those two I'd upgrade the GPU, it'd be a lot easier to upgrade the HD in the future than the GPU.
Also, if you could save up about 250 more you could always almost max it out with Dell's coupons and such. Maybe you shoud go to the What Should I Buy forum and fill out the FAQ there and we could find something good to better for yoru use. -
I would suggest upgrading your video card instead of the hard drive. It's easier to upgrade your hdd at a later time, and I'm not even sure if you can upgrade your video card after you've bought it. Perhaps someone else here could fill us in on the video card upgrade part though

You may be able to upgrade the GPU in the future, I believe on some models you can, very few though. I don't know if Dell solders the GPu to the MB in the E1505 or not though.

I upgraded the HD, but I'm not into games, so I couldn't really justify upgrading the GPU.

GPU isn't only for games, it's for graphics in general. Really, unless you do a lot of hard drive intensive stuff you're not going to see an enormous difference between a 5400 rpm and a 7200 rpm

Thanks alot to all who responded, I'm just going to go with the GPU. I've searched for laptops and I like this one.
Video Card or 7200rpm HD?
