I know there's a thread about this and I posted there a week and a half ago and didn't get a response so...

I read that the 64 MB Nvidia fx go 5200 is compatable with the 5150 and 8600. But in the video card thread it says that "you cannot replace a 64 MB Geforce FX 5200 with an ATI 9600 in an Inspiron 5150 because the ATI 9600 form factor is not compatible with the 5150."

does the form factor mean chassis design?
or are there two versions of the 64 MB Nvidia fx go 5200

Would it be possible to get the chassis of a video card from a 5150 and solder a new chip into it?

Did the 5160 have a 128 meg card? I am under the impression that all of the 51XX are the same chassis design, correct me if I am wrong please.

I also get a lot of errors when running fangui and speedstep and noticed that it does not happen to computers that don't have hyperthreading... anyone know anything about that?

I have a beefy 5150 Dell sent because they screwed my order so bad and it is seriously lacking in video card power... If I had fangui working properly and not causing my games to minimize do you think that overclocking the card would make a difference?

    Thanks,
    -Rob

yes, form factor = chassis design. theoretically, it would be possible to solder a new chip, except for 2 things... 1. how the replacement card will fit into the laptop once everything is put back together and 2. the BIOS supporting the new card

i think you'd be in trouble on both points.

Is the video card on the 700m upgradable?

The video cards on any laptop are only upgradeable to the cards that are specifically offered by dell for that laptop. Reason is because of the fit factor, plus Dell has it set up in the BIOS to only accept video cards that are offered by that laptop.

As far as I know the 700m only has 1 card. Untill Dell starts offering another card for it, you are stuck with the one that you have. :(

yea...dell usually just wants you to actually BUY another laptop for a better video card...which i think is pretty bad on the consumer's part...because hardware gets outdated every 2-4 years

Oh well...looks like I can't turn my laptop into a cheap desktop replacement.
