I have a Dell Inspiron E1705. I want to upgrade the Processor and Video card, they are currently
Intel core 2 duo 2.16 Ghz ( want to upgrade to 2.4 or 2.6)
    and
nvidia 7900 ( which I want to upgrade to 8700)
    Is this possible?
Im upgrading because I want a machine that can play Crysis even if it is on the lowest settings

You can upgrade to the highest card available for the 1705. And since you already have the best card, there is nothing else you can upgrade to that will fit.

And why wouldn't the 7900GS be able to play Crysis, even at low-medium settings?

There are no cards more powerfull that can be put in it?
And Its not that the video card CANT play crysis ( my cpu cant) but while Im upgrading I want to get more power and the 8600's look like a big step up from 7900

Also the 7900 isnt DirectX 10 compatable.

Both those upgrades are just a waste of money. For games slight change in CPU clock (2.16Ghz to 2.4GHz) is not going to make any difference.
E1705 will not support any DX10 (nVidia 8 series cards), therefore the best you can do is maybe a 7950GTX (assuming you have a GS), but that again is not a worthy upgrade. Wait a while and get a new notebook or better yet, buy a desktop for gaming. Its too expensive to maintain a gaming notebook.

BTW, I think a 7900GS can play Crysis at low/medium settings

Well you can't play Crysis on your laptop then.

You can definitely play crisis on your current laptop. Requirements are just a suggestion, doesn't mean that if you have less you absolutely can't play the game at all.

This whole GHz thing is a pain in the butt that Intel started when their P4s needed something to boast about. Don't worry about it, your processor is more than powerful enough.
