I have an Insperion 2200 I'm working on.I upgraded the memory last year. Was 256mb.Now it has 1 GB Kingsington.OS is Windows XP SP 2.I keep getting a message saying that the virtual memory is low.I have so far shut down most everything that loads during start up and I have ran anti spy, spam, virus software.I mainly get this when I'm shutting down, but it does occur when playing desk top games(Windows packaged games). Is there something else I can do?It's my G/F's puter.I just maintain it,because she crash pc's A LOT.3 at work so far.One was a special construction for her company by HP.It was not repairable.Dunno what she did,but they disciplined her for it.

If the back ground activities are less 1Gb should be enough for XP.

Did you check how much is our page file?Right click My computer and choose properties.Choose advanced tab and that, next to performance, processor scheduling etc press settings.Choose advanced and then press change button.See it's more than 2000MB.

Set it to System Managed Size if it isn't already set to that.

How much free disk space is available on the drive where the page file is located?

That could explain it... 515MB is very low for free disk space where your page file is residing.

The total size is not relevant. It's what you have left that's important. With 515 MB free you will run out of virtual memory every time the page file grows a little too much.

Time to clean up or upgrade the drive.

Cleared house!Down to 22.8 GB used on the drive. The rest is free. There was 30 something GB of java updates and add ons, lots of trial offer games, old software that wasn't being used.I got it cleared out.Runs more stable,it's faster, boot and shut down times are shorter. Thanks for the help.I didn't learn squat when I took advanced computer class back in 1993.Man I'm gettin old.

We're looking into a new lappy for her.The 2200 will be for the kids to mess with.
