All:
I just upgraded from 32 bit Vista to 64 bit Vista (it was free). The onboard mouse buttons and touchpad work fine in Vista 64. My problem is that I always use an external mouse. When I'm typing and my palm hits the touchpad my cursor moves. In Vista 32 bit I could set the onboard mouse buttons and trackpad to switch off in the Dell touchpad driver whenever an external mouse is plugged in. There is no 64 bit Vista driver to download from Dell. How do I turn this stupid touchpad off??? It's driving me crazy!!!

You can disable the touchpad when a mouse is in use with the Dell touchpad utility. On the Dell touchpad utility screen theres a Device select option which lets you disable your touchpad whenever it detects the presence of an external mouse.
If you dont have it installed you can download it from the Dell site.
I use a Bluetooth mouse, and I have my touchpad disabled when I use the mouse. -
Yes, I used to run Vista 32 and used to turn off the touchpad and onboard mouse buttons in the Dell touchpad driver. Again, my point is that there ARE NO Vista 64 drivers for the 1520 at Dell.com
Any ideas on how to nix this annoying problem? System bios??? -
I tried going into the system bios and turning off onboard mouse. No such option in there :-( I also tried to go into the Hardware Manager and turning off the PS/2 Compatible mouse that is listed. The "Disable" button is not clickable.
Ideas? -
There is a driver for the 1535 laptop that I read works on other models also. Its for the touchpad, in Vista 64 OS.
I dont know if you tried this or not, but you can download the driver from:
Code:http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R192617&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=264800
Code:http://www.vistax64.com/vista-hardware-devices/117419-alps-touchpad-drivers-vista-64-bit.html
Good luck, -
The Vista 64 driver for the 1535 installed fine. However, there is still no way that I can find to turn off the touchpad. This is highly annoying. I hope someone can help me with this. I won't put up with it for much longer before reinstalling Vista 32.

Try a driver for the M1530 then.
As long as you can get the dell mouse utility installed, thats all you need to change the settings. -
Open the Windows Control Panel, and open Mouse. The Mouse window should have a tab for the Dell Touchpad. Click that to open it, and you'll get a new window with 4 options. Select the first one, and check the box that says "Disable touchpad when external mouse is detected".
-
I go into Control Panel, Mice, Dell Touchpad, and there are only three tabs, but there is no checkbox to turn off the touchpad when an external mouse is plugged in. Under the driver tab there is a button to disable the mouse, but it is grayed out and can't be clicked.

Click on Device Select, and see the screenshots below

I don't have that software installed. I downloaded the M1530 Dell Mouse driver. The only difference between now and just after I had installed Vista 64 is the name of the onboard mouse when I look in control panel/mouse/far right tab. Vista 64 called it PS/2 compatible mouse. After installing the Dell Mouse driver it is called Dell Touchpad, but there are no additional options to turn it off.

I can't seem to find the dell mouse utility, just a generic driver under the XPS 1530, Vista 64 bit, input device drivers area. I know the utility you're talking about. I had it installed under Vista 32.

One of these should have the required drivers/software:
M1530 Touchpad / Pointing Stick
32-Bit Download
64-Bit Download
If neither of those work, then I am out of ideas. -
One thing I did notice is that a handful of my programs are installed under c:/program files. Most of them are installed under c:/program files(x86). The Dell mousepad driver didn't give me an option as to where to install.

Sometimes, even though it says its a 64-bit version, it will still install under the x86 folder because its not a truly 'native' 64-bit application, but the manufacturer probably had to change a few files for a 64-bit 'release'. I think I explained that right. -
Dell TPad folder is installed under Program Files. There is an executable in that folder called "hidfind". The icon shows a red X through the touchpad if a mouse is plugged in. Looks promising, however I double click it to launch and nothing happens.

Lol guys I did it exactly as Mastershroom told as, and I'm problem free and it really works!
Thank you Mastershroom bud! -
Glad to be of service.
I kind of accidentally stumbled upon that option a while ago...I always used to use an external mouse on this thing, and it was slightly annoying when I nudged the touchpad and it threw my cursor off...well, needless to say I was pretty excited when I figured out I could disable it while the USB mouse is there. -
So thank you once again.
