Sorry if this has been answered already, but i can't find it!!
Anyway, I recently installed Vista Ultimate on my 6400 with specs in my signature.
Well my problem is this, in XP MCE while running windows, the MediaDirect button would open up Media Center. Now with Vista, the MediaDirect button doesnt do anything. I have installed Dell Quickset, and still no joy. Any suggestions?
This was a clean install after formatting XP MCE. I managed to, "acquire" a copy of Vista. My intention to use it for the 30 day evaluation and then i might buy it. Undecided yet as i really think ill need more RAM. But i would like to solve this issue so it doesn't bias my decision. Apart from that, all is well, and i must say i quite like it! Not a mind blowing departure from XP but good.
Coincidentally, the version i have has full functionality. Nothing held back. Score!
Just to clarify, this problem is in no way associated with MediaDirect. I have gotten that working fine.

I run home premium and mine is under window button, all programs, windows media center. its a top level, not under the programs folders
-
Just to clarify, when I refer to the MediaDirect button, I mean the button on the more recent Dell laptops. I can launch Media Center from my programs fine. I just want to get the button working to make it quicker than navigating.

1) You need to call up Dell and get a copy of the MediaDirect Reinstall 3 DVD.
2) Totally wipe your hard drive clean.
3) Boot from the MediaDirect DVD to set up the partitions.
4) Boot from your Vista DVD to install Vista.
5) Install drivers and Quickset in Vista.
6) Inside Vista, insert the MediaDirect DVD.
7) Click Open Folder.
8) Double-click Dellkit.
9) The Dellkit folder appears in the right pane.
10) Right-click Dellkit.exe, and click Run as Administrator.
11) Follow the on-screen installation process. -
Yeah, i was going to say...
MediaDirect and Windows Media Center are two different things. The MediaDirect Button is for the Dell MediaDirect, not Windows Media Center...
You need to reinstall the MediaDirect from Dell (didnt your Laptop come with the reinstallation CD?) -
Ok, obviously i was not as clear as i had hoped. I am well aware that Media Center and MediaDirect are different, that is why i called them Media Center and MediaDirect.
Media Center operates in Windows, and is a part of Windows.
MediaDirect operates outside of windows and is seperate from windows. It is Dell software, (well cut down windows, but that doesn't matter)
Ok? Are we all clear on that??
Right. The button that for launching MediaDirect, launches MediaDirect when the laptop is powered off. That operation is fine.
Now, while windows Vista Ultimate is running, the button that is labelled MediaDirect, (the one beside the power button), does nothing. In XP MCE this button launched Media Center while windows was in operation. Does this button do anything in Vista? Does it launch " Media Center" while Vista is operational?? Or is it just a "spare" button?? (in the Vista environment)
To clarify..... This is not an issue with MediaDirect! MediaDirect runs fine. -
OK. Which version of MediaDirect is installed on your 6400?
In Vista, with MediaDirect 3 installed correctly, the MediaDirect button will launch MediaDirect inside Vista. -
Ah, i have MediaDirect 2.
So what you are telling me is this: The button to the left of the power button on Dell 6400/1505 will launch MediaDirect 3 when the computer is turned off, as well as when the computer is running Vista?
Is that statement correct?
That would explain a lot. Thank you. -
Yup. MediaDirect 2 is not compatible with Vista.
Vista Media Center
