I know a year from now Vista should be out & many hardware advances that seem tempting to wait for but is it worth postponing a notebook purchase for 6-12 months if you want a new notebook like Inspiron 9300 in January/Q1 2006 (but can live with current setup although less blissfully)?

I'd already be spending over a $1000 so an extended warranty with complete care seems worth it but if next time this year I want a new notebook with all these advances maybe it's worth risking standard 1 yr warranty.

However 9300 will easily be upgradeable to Vista & provides good bang for the buck now {that may be worth protecting with an extended warranty+complete care insurance}.

-I guess I'm also annoyed with how long the delays have been with Vista too.

    Thoughts?

P.S. - My other present concern is all the complaints about light leakage with Inspiron 9300 LCD that may or may not change by next yr with 9400 successor.

under my opinion, i think its unecessary to wait for the vista os. if you seen the screenshots, it hasnt changed at all! just some useless sidebar with a clock and some new themes which you can prob dl for winxp. i dont know, i think there isnt that much hype to wait 6-12 months just for the new os.

and the light leakage i have the truelife screen and i barely have any light leakage or any dead pixels. so i think its pretty good.

Yeah probably shouldn't wait as I could likely find substitute shells/skins/apps to emulate Vista feel-look but the 3D & transparencies are visually pretty cool..

A dedicated video card with DirectX 9 support is a good idea for Vista.

Personally, it wouldn't affect my buying decision. It's more than likely that any current notebook will run it just fine. All I can recommend is having at least 512MB of memory. A dedicated DX9-compatible graphics card is a plus if you want all the so-called 'special effects'. In my opinion, I do not care about how it looks. I know it will definitely decrease performance. Right now, I am using the classic theme in Windows XP, simply because it is faster. I have nearly all the eye candy disabled in order to get maximum performance. I tweak all of my computers to a very high level so they are lightning fast.

Windows XP is a very stable operating system for the most part, and I cannot see it being phased out for a while. I won't be upgrading to Vista right away - as a gamer, I'll probably upgrade when the games start to use Vista or require it.

If Microsoft made the interface different - every version of Windows looks virtually identical to Windows 95 - same structure, interface, etc. - then I might consider upgrading, but the way things are looking, I'm sticking with XP.

    OK sorry for my ramblings.

    www. LOL . com haha.

I'm more interested in the 64 bit world getting stable. My two 64 bit home systems are sick of 32bit operating systems.

I still can't believe that XP (even MCE 2005) doesn't have native support app for DVD authoring & its search functions are so slow & should have better 3D themes-graphics, voice recognition-reading but I guess it's nothing 3rd party software can't fill in. Does seem like Vista is in part trying to play catch up with Mac OS as usual but I think more advances need to be incorporated into the OS more frequently.

64 bit will be great but these other things seem easier to get quick adoption.

Guess Microsoft hasn't felt threatened by any software companies suing them. I recall a program called PKUNZIP. They sued MS and instead of allowing the suit to go to court, MS bought the company and shut them up, then took their knowledge and used it for winzip.

If any DVD authoring, Voice Recognition or anyone else sues MS, you'll see it in the next version. Haha.

Vista seems like a way to :
    1. Get everyone to buy another version of Windows under false pretenses.
    2. Get pirates to use it and get caught easier.
    3. Satisfy a mob hungry for something new in the OS world.
    4. Keep said mob from discovering Linux

I doubt Vista will do for XP what XP did for 98SE / M.E. . I enjoy the additions added to Media Center 05 so maybe I'll be one of the people who buy into the Vista thing.

I'll bet what's holding the release up is their bouts with anti-piracy. I've seen enough betas and screenshots in magazine to know they have the majority of it finished.

Then again, I haven't researched it in detail.
