I have both a M1530 and M1730. Both of them I bought with Vista Ultimate. How do I upgrade them to Vista Ultimate 64 bit? How do I get the 64 bit DVD since my DVD is OEM?

good question I have been looking for the same thing before I purchased my retail copy.
-
let me know how it goes and what the remedy is.
-
64 only included on the retail unless purchased as an 64 bit OEM
-
-
I don't think so, I tried and they said no.
-
That sucks.

Give them a call. I think that you have to specifically purchase the 64bit edition, because the the activation key is only good for the version of windows you have. Since you're version(s) are 32 bit, my guess is, that Microsoft will require you to purchase new cd/keys. Goodluck though.

You can't get a 64 bit version if you have a 32bit OEM copy. OEM is OEM. If you go out and buy a retail copy you are entitled to either 32 bit or 64 bit.

Can't hurt to try.
I'm going with the Vista Ultimate 64bit myself next month when a friend of mine who does data repcovery in Delaware sends me one. He gets 20 or so for his business as he also builds custom computers. At the same time, I think I'll upgrade to 4GB memory and a new 2 DuoT9300. -

Seems a bunch of people have upgraded to 64-bit with the same 32-bit keys. I even got a 64-bit disc for $16 from Windows Marketplace w/o a key, but now I am not sure how I did it because I could nt seem to make it work again today. Check the Notebokreview 64-bit Team thread.

the info is incorrect... when i purchased my retail version of vista ultimate that includes bothe 64bit and 32 bit install media.. it only came with one product key........
-
I've heard the same thing.
32-bit OEM, SOL
32-Bit retail, free 64-bit with purchase. -
Damn, I want to upgrade my vista to 64bit so I can use my 4 gigs of ram.
-
I don't think its illeagal to get a copy of 64bit from a friend as long as you purchase your own license
-
When I got my Dell laptop, it only came with the 32bit install disc because Dell sucks like that. I used the 64bit disc from a retail purchase but used the product key that came from Dell. Everything worked fine. I asked Microsoft support and they said it was fine.
-
64-Bit editions of Windows Vista will work and activate fine with the 32-bit key that is provided with your computer. Keep in mind that you have to start fresh if you are looking to make the switch from 32 to 64 bit.

for install information -
Where can I get the disk? I tried the market space, and it wouldn't take the serial on my system.

OK, I was able to order the Ultimate DVD w/o a license code. There is apparently a "bug" in the order system. When you have the Ultimate product page up, you will see a link under Additional Information about ordering disc's. Click that link. I just did, then clicked the Ultimate 64-bit DVD order button and got the order page without the license code page. Does not work everytime, so try it multiple times.
EDITED - Forgot the LINKIE -
What website/link? Thanks. -
-
is that a legit site or is it a site that captures your info and scams you please let me know also if its legit how long did it take for you to get your copy
-
I did some digging and found this LINK from a microsoft.com website promoting that site. So i guess it is legit. Nice. I might check it out.
Props if deserved! -
Yes, it is a legit site - it's basically MSFT's "store" ran by a 3rd party - Digital River. I got the disc in the mail in about a week. I am buying Ultimate 32-bit on my Dell and I got the 64-bit DVD - there is not reason (other than that OEM thing which I assume MSFT does not like to upgrade since they have less control over OEM versions) why one should not upgrade legally and ethically as long as you have the a proper key for the same version. Even MSFT says it's ok to install either 32 or 64 for the version you purchased. I did not try to scam anyone - I just went there one day and clicked and it worked.

I have made a 64-bit Vista disk using the link below, but have not yet tried it out. Apparently, you can download the files necessary to burn your own Vista 32- or 64-bit Vista disks. Of course, you need your own activation key, and, presumably, your 32-bit key should allow you to activate 64-bit Vista. Again, I have not tried this, but I am thinking about it.

So the DELL XPS M1730 does'nt come with 64bit?
-
Okay that link is legit. I ordered it the other night and 2 days later it was in my mailbox. It will come in a white disc mailer and the address on it is from Microsoft Way or somethig. I put the Disc in the computer and ran the insatll. I used my Dell OEM 32bit Key and it activated the 64 bit install. So this is a legit find. and great for the price. Its saver than getting someone's files from a file pot or ftp server. (you never know what malicious code someone can put in the mix) I say go get the disc now while its there. can't be long before they figure it out and take it off.
